I apologize if this has been covered once, twice, or beaten to death. I cannot get the search function on this site to provide any matches for anything I search for....

I have never reloaded before. I have never even watched somebody reload before. However, I need to get into reloading this year for my .30-06, but have no idea where to start.

So, the first thing I did, was ask an uncle that does reloading, if we could use his equipment for him to show me the ropes. He had no problem with that at all. He has all the equipment needed to load for my '06.

All I need to do is show up with powder, primers, bullets and brass.

Primers, easy
Brass, LOTS
bullets and powder : never been more lost in my life!!!

Can anyone guide me in the right direction as to what I should be picking up from the store? Anybody have a good starter load?

By the way, It will be shot out of a Remington 700 SPS, hoping to stay above 165 grains for deer hunting and paper punching out to about 200 yrd average...

You have no idea how much any information would be appreciated...

Get you a good reloading manual, such as Lyman #49, read it twice...pick a powder that shows as "most accurate load", purchase some std. cup and core hunting bullets(nothing too fancy or expensive) for your first reloading session.

A classic load for the '06 that often shoots very well in a variety of rifles:

165gn bullet
57.0gn IMR 4350
Federal 210 or 210m primer (any primer is fine though)

It's as good a place to start as any.

Another good load is:

165gn bullet
59.0gn H-4831
same story on the primer.

I would suggest using 165gn Nosler Ballistic Tips, they're a great bullet for target and deer.

You should buy a copy of 'The ABC's of Reloading'. It will give you a good background on what is going on.

I'm guessing your uncle will have some reloading manuals plus there is lots of data on-line as well. (See the sticky at the top of the reloading section here).

My favourite '06 load is with a 165 Ballistic Tip, Fed. 210m primer and a full, full case of Reloder 22. You can barely get all the powder into the case and it's a compressed load, which is one more complication you don't need to be messing with when starting out. Velocity and accuracy are top notch with this load though.

Good luck and have fun.

"...hoping to stay above 165 grains for deer hunting..." You don't need heavy bullets for deer. However, work up any 165 grain hunting bullet and you'll be set for any game you care to hunt. The .30-06 loves 'em. The key is to work up the load for your rifle.
165's will be tolerable for shooting targets. Serious target shooting is best done with match bullet$. 150's for out to 300 yards, 168's out to 600, 175's past there. Match bullets are not cheap though. They're not required for informal shooting either.
My .30-06's aren't hunting rifles, M1 Rifle and a 1903A4(with 168 grain match bullets). They prefer IMR4064.

The 30-06 is so versatile. You could not have started out with a better candidate for learning to reload. The combinations already suggested are good. If you want to go to 180 grain bullets, then 55 grains of IMR 4350, or 58 grains of IMR 4831 will work well. Always start a couple of grains down and work up in ½ grain increments to be safe. Regards, Eagleye.

Horeshoe I have been loading for many years for the 06 and as Eagleye mentioned and others there loads are proven you can,t go wrong I use the 165gr Nosler BT and there Accubonds or partitions.
I tried for first time this fall 165gr nosler Accubonds, winchester brass, Fed gold match primers and Rl 17 by Alliant Powders got more speed and acccuracy than any other powders I have ever used. now not by much over other powders but quite noticable
good luck

for my 30-06..i use 180 gr bullets with 55 gr of h 4350 powder...

but no matter what you read on the net, always double check it with a manual before you start;)..
the ABC,s of reloading is a great manual to help you get set up

The search tool works but it is a pain.

In the 'Search by Keyword' enter "IMR 4350" (in quotes) (it is the powder I use too)

Select the 'Search in Forum(s) - Reloading

Select the 'Find posts from" - 36 Months Ago (very important as it defaults to 'A Week Ago')

Check the 'Show results as" - Threads option.

You'll find a few threads where 30-06 reloading has been discussed. Take the advice the others here have suggested already and good luck.

Folks this is not the right place for me to ask but I have spent countless hours to search for firearms for sale (restricted and non restricted). Please help me on how to find these items for sale on this website. Appreciate your help!!!!

Wow thanks a tonn!!!! I could treat you to lunch for this really saved me tonns of headache! Thanks buddy!!!!

I reload 30-06 and use either of 2 powders. 180 gr bullets pushed by 51 gr IMR4350 or 43 gr IMR3031. Lighter 140s by 60 gr IMR4350 0r 51 gr IMR3031.

Both types shoot about the same for each weight. though the 4350 seems more robust.

I've loaded 165 gr nosler BT's with rl 19 as well as the accu-bonds with rl 19, both had good groups and velocities. For moose I loaded 180 gr hornady inter-bonds with rl 22 that load chrono 'd at 2840 -2865 in the 10 tested at the range nice groups moa @ 200yrds. passed the ultimate test 1 moose in the freezer!! Buy a good reloading manual an read it cover to cover. I have 4 2 from speer, one from the 70's and the latest one. The new one from nosler, and one I got for x-mas in 97 from hornady. I can pretty much flip to anyone page off by heart when looking up info I've read them so much. If your uncle will help get you started learn as much as possible and never ever rush, take your time and it will become a hobby you'll likley really enjoy.

All very good advice in this thread. I am also very new to reloading and the only real advice i can give is dont rush anything, do it right the first time and pay attention so you dont have to pull 30 bullets and re measure all the powder
