.30-06 load Wtf!?

I've never noticed a great deal of difference between ammo loaded and shot in warm weather and stuff shot in cold weather, even using IMR 4350. I've shot my 30-06 load over a 50 degree temperature range and it always seems to work right. I also prime with magnum primers in the 30-06 and 9.3x62 (can't remember what I used in the 25-06 - it's been a long time since I shot that rifle).

I'm sure with you on this one!
Only difference is I always use standard primers, H4831 or 4350 in very cold weather and it always works.

3000fps with 165gr bullet in 3006 is no big deal. Hornady's manual 3rd edition lists loads for their 165gr IL and 2 powders; H205 and win 760 aka H414 at safe 3000fps. Low capacity brass, hot primer or temp, fast barrel, diferent powder lot (or dryier), Chrony calibration or the combination of other factors might contribute to higher speeds than expected. So what is the story here?

Well the story is, I didn't understand what had caused the jump in velocity, but I believe after reading the replies here that it is all about the warm ambient temp.

But I hafta say this; there is no benefit to the extra velocity. The loads I fired with these bulets, at ~2850fps MV were very accurate, better then these.

If these 3000fps+ loads had been MOA I'd probably shut up...

I'm gonna re-work my 165gr .30-06 loads and try to get something that shoots more accurately, at the 2850fps MV that I want.

Here's another thought, completely different .... I have had unreasonably high velocity readings from my chrony when shooting in direct sunlight with the sun behind or angled behind. Has to do with the reflection off of the bullet interfering with the "shadow" passing the sensors. Did you use yours with the diffuser installed?

^ Yes sir, I had the sunscreens on. It was sunny and warm, the day I reported these fast loads.

But then the .35Whelen loads I fired were exactly what I would expect...

How does the sunlight affect the Chrony? I don't quite get that. Aren't there certain conditions when you don't even require the sunscreens? I've always been baffled by that...

I only use the screens on bluebird sky days. Overcast I'll just shoot over the sensors.

I'd try H4350 if you're looking for a temp insensitive powder for 30-06

^ So that's why I occassionally get *Error2* or whatever, when shooting. I have always used the screens whether it's sunny or cloudy. I honestly didn't know it mattered! And I've been using the damn thing for 10 years!

So I also got advice to throw an extra large cover over the screens when it's really bright out. I think I'm gonna try that too.
