Advise please.....after consulting many reloading source's - I am still unable to determine what the correct C.O.L is ? for a 30.06 - I have loaded 25 rds of 30.06 with 180 gn hornady spire point bullets - my over all length is 83.72mm - however the engraved portion of the bullet ( where that line is cut into the brass portion on the bullet ) is sitting approx 2mm above the the neck rim......and my overall length is slightly short of 3.340 ( 84.84mm) is the bullet seated deep enough ?? or should I press it down till the engraved portion of the bullet is just at the rim of the neck - even if the overall length is shorter than (84.84mm). What are the disadvantages of having an overall shell length shorter than the books specify??
suggestions would be appreciated....thanks

If you mean the circular ring around the projectile, that would be the canular. If it's still sitting higher than the end of the case and your round still fits in the mag for "1" and still chambers with no issue "2" just shoot them and see how they group. Changing the overall length is one of the tools used to tune the load to your rifle. As is changing the powder charge, brass and primers.

Lots of 30 call bullets are made for lots of different cases. For most folks loading the .06, crimping isn't even an issue.

I have a Remington 700 SSDM, and the 180 Hornady is seated to 3.440" COL. That means the cannelure is well outside the case neck. No problem, as Steeleco has stated, as long as it fits in the magazine and is not jammed into the rifling. You need to measure the throat length to determine where it is possible to go. I use a Stoney Point OAL gauge, but there are other, simple methods that work. Keep in mind that the limiting factor for Overall length may well be the magazine length. Regards, Eagleye.

Thanks much...for your input...I was under the impression that each round had to be exactly the max overall length.....for accuracy in a while i will figure out what length works the best - for safety I will start by making them a bit shorter and work up to max length....appreciate your help...

My old M77 in 338 shot much better with longer rounds, but they wouldn't fit in the mag.
Each gun definitely has it's own likes and dislikes!!
