30-06 powder for 200gr bullets

Mark's QL chart pretty well verifies my MRP load. :) I have been a big user of MRP for many years, and it is
pretty close to optimum in the 30-06 with bullets from 180 grains and up. Looks like Reloder 26 is a winner
as well. Remember.....always start lower and work up carefully!! Dave.

Dave as you and i have both read a LOT of times RL22 and Norma MRP and supposed to be one and the same . Whats your OPINION ? RJ

They are not the same. Close but not identical. If you look at both side by side they are different. MRP burns much cleaner and is more temp stable. You can get much higher velocities with MRP than with RL22 and at lower pressures. I was able to get 3030 FPS with a 150 grain Sierra BT in a 270 win and 22.4 barrel with 59.5 grain. The group was 0.6 inches. I could have gone 0.5 to 1 more grain up but 3030 is enough for me.

As for the OP question I would follow Dave's advice.

Lots of good info here guys. The rifle in question is a factory Winchester M70 LH. Looking online Winchester uses 1-10” twist for 30-06. Hoping it will stabilize the 200gr AB fine. I’m going to go ahead and work up a load with H4831SC and see how it goes. Unfortunately I don’t have a chronograph yet. It’s next on my purchase list. If H4831SC doesn’t work out I’ll go looking for some Reloader 26 or MRP. I have seen the complaints of MRP being inconsistent lot to lot.

Dave - what is your experience with the temperature sensitivity of RL 26 and MRP?

As mimile has stated, they are quite close, but definitely not identical. I use both powders, and the 22 is more sensitive to temp changes than is MRP.
Under 36x magnification, the powders look a bit different as well.
I have almost always got a bit higher velocity from MRP before pressure signs appear. Dave.

26 is better than 25, but MRP is just as good, even in quite cold temps.
I have not seen lot-to-lot issues with MRP, but it's predecessor, Norma 205
was certainly bad in that respect. [Up to 2 full grains, lot-to-lot]

I spoke to Nils Qvale at Norma many years ago, soon after MRP had replaced N205.
He was quite candid, and said that consistency was the reason for the change, and
that 205 and MRP were very similar, with more attention to MRP to attain better consistency.
My experience with both powders [MRP and N205] supports that. Dave.

Thanks mbogo. I have Reloader 22 but don’t love it’s temp instability. I use to use it lots in my 6.5x55. I had sold that rifle and just got another one so maybe will develop a load that isn’t pushing max for more casual shooting and use up the 3lbs I have that way. I don’t think I’ll be developing hunting loads with it.

Dave- I think I’m going to try to pick up some Reloader 26. It’s hard to not get excited about these high BC bullets even with H4831 velocities.

Never had an issue with RE#22 use it in my .300H+H and exclusively in all my 6.5x55's in all weather conditions.

Please let us know if you find any RL26. I looked everywhere for it with no success.
