I just purchased a RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme kit. I'm completely new to this and as much information would be best before I start buying powders and bullets.

So far from my reading these forums and, i hear good things about Varget powder and TSX tips. I've got a Tikka T3 with a Zeiss Victory 3x12 X56 . I plan on using my setup for Deer hunting.

Any help would be great.

You are wondering what bullets to use in your 30-06 for shooting deer?
Look at it this way, you would be hard pressed to find a bullet for the 30-06 that would not be suitable for deer hunting.
My advice. Get any bullet, might as well be low priced, in either 150, 165 or 180 grains, made by any bullet maker you ever heard of, that is designed for big game shooting and load away.

Barnes TSX

I love Barnes TSX bullets, but if the only game I was shooting was deer I wouldn't bother using them. They are very expensive, and are not needed for deer. I would use a good bullet like a Hornady 165 gr, Sierra Gameking or something like that. CCI 200M primers would be great, and use a powder that will give you like a 95% load density. Powders like IMR 4064,H4350,Big Game, or IMR 4350. If you do go with the Barnes bullets, go with a light for caliber bullet. I have found these bullets are way more effective pushed as fast as possible. My 25-06 pushes a 100 Gr TSX BT at 3500 ft/sec load 15 thou off the lands. They open right up and flatten deer.

Varget is a pretty hard powder to find right now. If you do find some a decide to use it plus take the time you work up a load make sure you buy a crap load of it otherwise you are probably wasting your time. Lots of other options out there right now. I am having good luck with re-15 and 165 game kings in my 308. Probably work ok in your 30-06.

The first centerfire cartridge I loaded for almost 30 years ago on my then new Rock Chucker press was the 30-06... :D

I messed around with different bullet weights from 150gr to 220gr and ended up settling on 165gr bullets due to them giving the best retained energy's and velocities.

My favorite powder is IMR4350 with any 165gr bullet is an awesome performer.

I ended up selling any/all my 30-06 rifles I had, so I parked my 30-06 ammo that I had away.

I just bought a NIB Rem 700 LSS in 30-06 from Rembo I am actually heading out this afternoon with my older son he will be using this rifle loaded with 150gr Rem Core Lok bullets @ 2800fps they are sighted in 2" high at 100 yards so should only be 1 1/2" low at 200 yards.

Here is a key reloading step do not over lube the neck/shoulder area of the case before resizing if you do ypu will know right away when you remove the brass from the die you will have indents around the shoulder if you do get these it isn't that big of a deal load them up anyway and fireform them back to shape.

They will work fine but it is embarrassing for others to see your reloads... :p

Nosler

I use nosler Ballistic tips at the range ($24/ box) and Nosler Accubonds for hunting ($36/ box). They are identical in performance & look except for the tip color. It makes it a bit more reasonable cost wise to shoot as well...
