Looking to pick up a 30-06 for deer, bear, moose, etc. in the Okanagan area of BC. Have a 30-30 for short range, need to look for something for longer range and bigger game.
Not wanting to spend over $500 if possible so looking for some suggestions, new or preowned.
Possibles for new are:
Remington 710 @ $410 with a Bushnell 3x9
Savage 111FCXPE @ $430 with a Simmons 3x9
Mossberg 100ATR @ $300
Stevens 200 @ $320
Any and all advice welcome.
Thanks !

Personally out of the ones listed there I would go with the Stevens 200....do a search and you'll find that they have quite a good rep for a lower-priced gun.

If it was me, I would look at buying a good used gun for that $500 mark, or try to find one a bit cheaper and then scope it. I know I saw a Win Model 70 in 30-06 for $500 listed in the 'exchange' forum....worth a look if you can spend a bit more with the scope...

Stay away from the 710.....do a search of '710' and you'll find SEVERAL great reads....

I have a Winchester Model 70 Black Shadow in 30-06. It's push feed and in my opinion, a very reliable, low maintence meat-on-the-table rifle that you should be able to pick up for not too much. I'm a fixed magnification guy when it comes to scopes only because I do all of my hunting in the boreal forests of northern Alberta and as such, most of my shots are no more than 100 or so yards. You, however, have much more open space in the Okanagan and may be well advised to invest in a decent variable to make those ethical long shots across the scrub, I think you may be a little hard pressed to be able to keep it under the $500.00 line simply because a decent scope will set you back.

You set on a bolt? Otherwise Baikal and NEF make break-action guns in the sub-$300 range.

I've heard rumours that the Stevens are going up in proce soon, so snap it up NOW if that's what you want.

Of your options listed, I'd go for the Stevens, or the Mossberg. Actually, if it were ME, I'd go mossberg, mostly because I already have 3 Stevens'

Stevens 200 or Remington SPS. Mossberg is probably okay, too. Get a decent scope like a Bushnell Elite 3200 or Leupold VXII in 3-9x40mm and you're all set.;)

Wow, thanks for the heads up on the Remmy. How about a Remington 700 - there's a nice used one available to me ?
The singles are a thought - I'm a south paw and its hard to find lefties in bolt action.

Lots of lefties shoot Remington 7600s :D

They are great working guns, fast and accurate!

Don't forget the 7400's, too.

But the 700's, 7400's & 7600's are all above his budget, unless he can get a deal on a used one.

spend a little extra and pick up a Rem SPS ( or SPS SS) and a quality scope. it will be worth it in the long run.

personally, if I lived in the Okanogan I'd be buying a .270win over a .30-06, but that's just me.

you;re a sick man. go beat your head against a wall untill I tell you to stop.

Like Rackmastr says why not get a good used gun from the exchange forum. For $500 you should be able to get something good. Every week there are good buys.

I have picked up guns there in your price range which I consider better than any of those.;)

At the risk of being beaten I would suggest the Baikal single shot in .30-06. The rifle will run you around 275.00. The rest of your budget could go towards a good scope and mount. I have one and I love it. The Mannlicher barrels are DEAD accurate. The only draw back is it has only one shot. But good hunters like you and me only need one, right?

again, just my two cents, Darryl

rem 700

If the remington 700 is in your price range buy it, they are good reliable guns and very easy to get components for if you are loooking to improve it in the future.
