30-06 Suggestions ?

At the risk of being beaten I would suggest the Baikal single shot in .30-06. The rifle will run you around 275.00. The rest of your budget could go towards a good scope and mount. I have one and I love it. The Mannlicher barrels are DEAD accurate. The only draw back is it has only one shot. But good hunters like you and me only need one, right?

again, just my two cents, Darryl

Philistine! Come hither so I can beat you senseless!:D

Seriously, check out the exchange forum. There's always lots of interesting things there. Maybe you can find a nice M70 Featherweight, if you're lucky. If you're set on a new rifle, go for the Stevens, though I've not heard any good things about their stocks.

I'd also say to top it with a Leupold 4x. Guys are damn near giving them away because they want newer, bigger and "better". They're perfect for a 30-06.

Or go with SuperCub's reccomendation. Those A Bolts are usually shooters right out of the box. I quite like them. If I was looking for an '06 right now I'd buy that Browning in a second.

That was my first hunting rifle, A-Bolt but in .270
As BUM said, deadly right out of the box.
Sold it for something a little bigger,(30-06 actually) because "THEY" said the 30-06 is a better "all round" cartridge etc. etc. etc. ,went thro' a few more rifles as was never quite happy (you know how it goes) and now finished back with a very nice Tikka Hunter in .270, right back where i started.:D

Bolt action, with clip and a good scope and you are away to the hunting fields of success. If you are not a hand loader take the time to learn it's worth the effort.
