I just started reloading a couple of years ago and so far have not experimented alot.I have been using imr 4350 for both my 243 and 30-06.I am very happy with the results I have been getting with the 243 but not so much the 30-06 and was thinking of trying 4064 with 150 great Hornady spbt leads. Was just wondering if any of you more experienced reloaders have tried this combination and what yous think of it.

4064 will work well with your light to medium bullets in 30-06.

4350 is one of my favorites in 30-06, but that is shooting 180 - 210 grain bullets.

4350 is usually very good with 165 great bullets as well so not sure why the opportunity is not getting good results with it.

I was shooting 4350 with 165gr ssts. The best groupings I was getting were about 3" with 57.6 grs.Anything more or less the groups would start opening up more.I know the gun will shoot better than that as it did with factory ammo.I was thinking on starting at 51grs of 4064 with federal 210 primers.

There is something about 4064, always seems to produce accurate loads for me. My 30-06 loves it with hornady interlock flat based 150gr bullets, I tried 165 sst as well and it just sprayed them. Whether it be sierra or hornady the flat based bullets have always shot more accuratly for me than boattails.

My main reason for getting away from the ssts is last season I shot a buck about 140yds.Hit him perfect and off he went. About 20 minutes later I hear a shot on the next farm over.So I head over and start looking and just the odd drop of blood here and there.Of course follow the trail onto the next farm, talk to the guy who shot and he says this buck he shot came from the other direction (yeah right).anyway we find the buck,I know it's the one I shot, one hole in him and the sst never opened and just pencil holed through. That deer went probably 700 yds.Anyway instead of fighting over him,I just walked away.Probably just a fluke with that bullet, but I will never use them again.

IMR 4064 in the .30/06 is a classic combination. A few years ago, Handloader Magazine produced a table of loads that would replicate WW2 military loads in which they listed that 48.0gr of 4064 behind a 150gr Hornady Spire Point in a M1 Garand would reproduce the M2 ball load at a muzzle velocity of 2,678 fps. Using military loads as a standard, the table went on to recommend 48.0gr of Varget under a 155gr Hornady A-Max in the M1917 (2,695 fps), 48.0gr of H-4895 under a 155gr Nosler HPBT in the M1903A3 (2,712 fps), and 55.0gr of H-4350 under a Sierra HPBT in the older M1903 (2,718fps).

Again, the IMR-4064 is classic powder in the .30/06! I've used it with great results in the .303 Brit as well. My only complaint is that it's a bit more temperature sensitive than Varget or H-4895.

The US military loading of the 30-06 with 150 grain bullets at about 2,700 fps velocity is a pretty puny load, usually not what a hand loader wants in his bolt action sporter.
That said, IMR4064 is a traditional, classic load with 150 grain bullets. Loaded to the 3,000 fps velocity range it leaves little to be desired as a long range hunting rifle on medium game.

True, but this is what often keeps our older M1 Garands humming along very nicely H4831.

What he said. 4064 is my "go to" powder. 49 grains with flat based sierra's is a winner

I had one rifle that wouldn't shoot worth a damn with H4350... as a last resort I tried IMR 4350 and had it grouping around 3/4" with that change alone. I've never seen anything like it, given that the two 4350's are so similar.

On the OP, ditto others that 4064 is good in the '06; maybe a touch fast for bullets 180gr and up though.
