My son who's 13 wants to go moose hunting this fall so i plan to load some reduced recoil 150 gr Hornady RNs to get him started this summer. the rifle is a M70 Featherweight post 64 Luepold 2-7. Quite light. So anyways, I've managed to find 4895 for the whelen and was hoping I could load some for the 30/06. Has anyone gone this route i.e. the 60% formula? Or maybe just some opinions? Thanks in advance.

In an old article by Finn Aagaard, he recommended 47 gr. of IMR 4895 for a velocity of 2550 with the 150 gr bullet. Just note that IMR4895 is slightly quicker than H 4895. He also used H4895 with a 170 gr. flat nose @ 2400 fps.

With those components I would look at starting loads for the Garand. I run ~48gr of IMR4064 under 165gr SST's and they are very mild. With the lighter bullet and a starting charge weight you should get it down even lighter.
