30-06

Anything that is 30-06 will work in that rifle.

Are you asking what will put 5 shots inside a dime at 100 yards? If that is the case then you have to shoot a lot of ammo to find what works best, no two rifles, even the same model will shoot the same ammo the same way.

For deer and moose, any 180gr bullet in 30-06 will do the trick.

180 gr. Core lokts. Then get your buddy to shoot after you're done sighting in. There can be a drastic change in p.o.i. just from the way people hold their rifles differently.

What he said. But if your buddy is getting you to site it in. Make sure he shoots a box or two through it before the season starts. Don't forget to get the 26 oz botle up front.

I went through similar exercise many years ago. Bought all sorts of ammo in 150gn and up to the range. Best results I had with Rem Corelokt and Fed Fusion.
Continued hunting with Rem ammo as they were cheaper. Dropped a lot of deer with that ammo. Typical shooting range 150-300yd.

I'd try Federal Powershok 180 grain soft points, Hornady Precision Hunter 178 grain ELD-X, Remington Core-Lokt 180 grain , Remington Premier Swift A-Frame PSP 180 grain, Federal Fusion 180 grain, Sako Super Hammerhead 180 grain Bonded Soft Point, for starters. In my opinion if you want to try less options I'd go with the Precision Hunter, Fusion, and Sako ammo.

Also, make sure he use the same ammo you used to sight-in.

POI of the rifle will not change, assuming the gun is sighted in with a vise, but yes, some guy holding it on the tailgate of a pickup vs his buddy there can be a significant difference.

Another thing many guys forget to do is actually shoot a gun without a rest, shooting on a lead sled and hitting your target is one thing but shooting in a tree stand or from free hand is entirely different, nothing to do with sighting in but a lot to do with an ethical kill shot.

There was a guy at the range in Oct, had a 6.5x55mm mauser with a Zeiss scope, talked up how he got this setup for $3500. He pulled out his PPU ammo, fired 4 shots from a bench and bags at 100 yards, put all 4 shots inside 12in at 100 yards and called it a day, said he would kill a deer. I really hope he brought the bags and bench out with him to his blind and shot at one at 50 yards, not 100.

My Vanguard likes every 180 grain bullet I have tried in it so far. [7 different bullets]
I would presume it will shoot factory ammo well also.
Some rifles are just not fussy. :) EE.

Another option for 30-06 heavy bullet factory loads is Sako ammo loaded with 220gr Hammerhead bullets which are bonded core. Claimed muzzle speed is 720 m/s (2360 fps) from a 600 mm (23.6") barrel.

Ammo of choice for my new 30-06 Sako Bavarian Carbine. :)

You REALLY don't need premium ammo for hunting deer and moose.

Winchester 180 Power Point or Remington 180 Core Lokt, or about any US made 180 gr factory ammo you can find. Buy 2 boxes, maybe 3. One box to sight in and the rest for hunting. Buy 2-3 boxes at the same time and they will all shoot to the same place, buy them a year apart and they will probably be different lot# and might not shoot to the same point.

I've been reloading for 5-6 years now but sometimes I wonder why with all the good factory ammo available today. But it is more fun to play with powders and seating depth I guess.
