.30-06

^Good choice, either the Stevens 200 (currently $320 at SIR mailorder) or its twin brother the Savage 111. The Sav is a package deal, comes with a Simmons 3-9x40 scope mounted and bore-sighted. I bought my 111 from SIR a year ago for about $460 shipped. Mossberg also makes a budget 30-06 called the 100 ATR ("All Terrain Rifle", apparently), they go for about $20 less than the Stevens 200. You'll notice I didn't mention the Remington 710, mostly because it's not worth mentioning :p Seriously, I've never shot one so I can't say how good/bad they are, but I just personally wouldn't buy one. Alternately, if you're not dead-set on a 30-06 you might consider something in 7.62x54R, like a Mosin Nagant, which can be had for around $150 these days :D 7.62x54R is ballistically almost identical to 308, and with handloads could easily be equal to 30-06 as far as velocity and energy is concerned (while probably being a total ##### to shoot, as if M44's weren't bad enough!!!). The biggest advantage is the cost of ammo, since bulk milsurp 7.62x54R is relatively cheap (dirt cheap compared to 30-06 commercial ammo). The cost for a box of 1120 rounds of 7.62x54R is around $200 from Marstar, which unfortunately is greater than the cost of the rifle! lol! But hey, beggars can't be choosers. Just a suggestion, in any case

Go into any decent gunstore in the country and you can find a used Remington, Ruger, Winchester or Savage or maybe some other brand in very good condition includeing a decent mounted scope in the price range you listed. bearhunter

The mossberg ATR is a great rifle. A buddy of mine has one and it is well worth it.
I agree, although I've never seen or fired one :D I like all the features it has except for the fixed top-loading mag (the Stevens 200 has the same thing though, so it's not a big deal), and the fact that it's only chambered in 270 and 30-06. If it were available in other calibers like 223, 22-250 and 243, it would probably outsell the Stevens 200 by a good margin. That being said, if someone in marketing at Savage got off their ass and put a decent looking stock on those Stevens rifles instead of the horrible elephant skin grey ones, they'd really have something...

X2. If you like really crap stocks, you might like the Stevens 200 (I've got one in .223) but the Mossberg is a great shooter for just "a few dollars more" with much better fit and finish and not a garbage "throwaway" stock. You can get a Stevens 200 for about $320. The Mossy is about $400...
Both good shooters...

who would have guessed that?:D

my dad has a 7600 carbine in 30-06. nice gun. Might be on the expensive side of his price range though. How much do they run for, new, now?
I think you'll see guns alot cheeeeper this fall, given the rise of the CDN dollar.

BTW ............. I own more bolt guns than pumps :)

The remy 700 SPS is going for $500-$600.I have a SPS 30-06 barrel on one of my rifles, sub MOA when I do my part.RB

Absolutely. These can be gotten for under $500 if you look around. You can use the action as the basis for an awesome custom down the road too. I know one of the top F-Class shooters in BC who uses a 700-SPS action for one of his rifles.

What are some affordable but good quality .30-06 rifles?

Affordable $500-$700 range.
I just recieved a 223 Remmie 700 SPS in Matte blue with synthetic from SIR for a Total of $550ish shipped and tax included.
They offer them in Most calibres including the 06:cool:
Try and find an Old Used 700 for that....;)
The stainless SPS adds a 100 bucks if you'd rather go that route.
