I have decided to order up a reamer for the 30-30.
I have a few questions before I do some ordering.
As I have never done this. I will be having a smith do the job

Do I just need a finishing reamer?
Floating pilot or solid pilot.
Should I just get new dies or have the ones I have reamed out as well?
What brand/mfg so you recommended?

Any other things needed to order besides the reamer it’s self?

I plan to sell the reamer after I’m done. So would like a quality one.

Floating pilot or solid pilot. Floating is nicer

What brand/mfg so you recommended? Manson and JGS are two great makers, not PT&G

Just my thoughts...

Typically all Ackley Improved are 40 degree... there are other Improved cartridges of various degrees... All the "improved" means is a factory round can be safely fired in that chamber and it will safely fire form.

Anyone have experience with hand reaming a AI chamber?
Been doing some more reading and because you can’t really do a barrel set back on a H&R and apparently not really needed on a rimmed case. I am tossing around the idea of doing it my self.

Any thoughts?

I've done 2 by hand

Savage 340 and a Carcano 30-30

its not hard you need to make a long handle and then go slow with cutting oil and clean it often

you will need to figure out how not to go too deep, I just eyeballed it and got lucky.

According to mason reamers.
You use a regular 30-30win go gauge and the “NO GO” and then a 30-30AI no go gauge.

That’s what I was thinking anyway.

Once you fire-form the brass you should be ok for head space anyway?

Without being able to set the barrel back factory ammo is kinda out of the question as you will have headspace issues unlike with a properly done AI chamber?

You can fire factory ammo but when reloading that fire formed brass, make sure not to push the shoulder back more than a thou or two.

I got a line on two smiths that might have the reamer. I am going to speak with first. If not I will order it my self
I got 30-30AI dies waiting for me in the mail box. Hopefully grab them tonight

Has anyone ever, bought the go, no go gauges and made them into a chamber reamer...wait...what...can it be done, yes, if your only doing one or two , like yours...30-30, to 30-30AI...just cutting the shoulder mostly.
Just my backyard/ hillbilly...two cents...lol...alot easier to get go, no go gauges..
Cheers

I am confused. Please explain how go and no go gauges can be made into a chambering reamer... they are short and have no way of cutting metal.

I have tried to make my own fluted reamer twice now, lets just say there is a whole lot of learning involved with each attempt.

I figure that another dozen tries and I might have something that I would use to cut a chamber.

its not as easy as one would think.

None.
Standard .30-30 headspace gauges are shorties, the case being rimmed. I suppose there could be .30-30AI gauges which work like rimless cartridge gauges, referencing off a datum point on the shoulder. But that has nothing to do with firing a factory cartridge.
Assuming correct rimmed headspace, a .30-30 factory round is going to fireform into whatever shape the chamber is cut.
