Last year I bought a pre-64 Winchester Model 94 in .30 WCF (.30-30 Win.) for use as by back-up whitetailed deer gun. I have been using factory Remington Express cartridges with 170 gr. bullets. I have been thinking of trying out 150 gr. bullets for deer.

What brand of factory ammo and bullet type/weight do you guys recommend for deer?

..............i have one made in 1949 and have tried about 4 or 5 different handload recipes and to this day nothing shoots better than the 170 grain Winchester silver points.

Keep your eyes open I believe SPEERS is making a "SPECIAL" pointed bullet for the 30-30 lever action. It supposidly has a soft polymer tip which will not set off the cartridge sitting infront of it in the tube mag. This should drasticlly increase range and accuracy. I belive the round will be somwwhere in the 150 range.

Its actually Hornady's Leverevolution ammo. www.hornady.com

if I had to hunt with 30-30 factory ammo, I think I'd go with Hornady 170 gr. or Federal Premium 170 gr. Noslers

................I have loaded and got fairly decent groups with the Hornady Interlocks Tod speaks of but i can't get past the horrid B.C. of .189 Even hot loaded you end up with around 800 ft lbs at 175 yards. Johnny Y Canuck will argue with me and rightly so as he has actual game experience with the Hornady interlock 170 grainers and i do not.
