30-30 bolt action

savage 340, stevens 325 and CIL 8-something are all the same gun. There's also the rem 788, and a few swiss schmidt-rubin milsurp guns that have been re-chambered

Gatehouse made one. Im pretty sure he made it, because I dont think a manufacturer would market something that ugly. I believe he made it in his garage with hand tools, drunk of course, like the true artist he is

340 Savage was I think the most popular, under a number of brands. However, I believe there were a number of other bolt guns chambered in 30-30.
The 30-30 is quite accurate out of a GOOD bolt gun, and lets you use pointed bullets of course. However, the concept never really took off, as any bolt gun, is just more cumbersome than a good lever gun for the bush ranges the cartridge was designed for, and handloading is required to enjoy the true potential of the Bolt gun/30-30 combination.

My 30-30 doesn't seem to like pointy bullets!! Won't feed!!

Damn thing doesn't relaly have a feed ramp..I may have to put some sort of taper crimp on the cases, as it seems to be hanging up on the mouth. Only with pointy bullets, not flat nose...

Weird

don't forget, husqvarna made one, a model 35 or something like that, only seen photos of them, they look to be made on a mauser 71 type action.

I may try the LEE die, but it does seem odd that only spire point bullets are getting hung up, although i believe that is occuring because they have to be seated so deeply to fit the magazine.

I also feel the magazine may be the culprit, and will order a replacement.

The chamber has a little lip round it, and the case mouths are getting stuck on it. Crimping may solve this, or maybe a new mag which has a stronger spring and pushes the cartridge up higher, or maybe pulling out the Devil dremel and removing that damn lip is the answer:evil:

A light touch with the Dremel has solved many an issue. Never liked doing it to a part of the chamber that supports the case head. I know it's not really a problem as long as you go easy, still, it would be a last resort for me.
How about pulling the bolt, and going at it with a dowel wrapped with crocus cloth?

I've got a Savage model 340 as well. Anyone know where I could pick up a scope mount for it? It's got 3 tapped holes on the left side of the action, and I've seen a pic of a left-side mounted scope, but can't find where the mount is available.

Anyone think these guns are worth the cost of having a gunsmith make a scope mount?

I am trying to track down a crimp die...It seems that the FACTORY flat noses feed fine, but the ones I loaded dont'..I think it's just the lip on the case hanging up on the flange thing, so when I find a crimp die, I'll give it a go...

If it still hangs up, the devil tool may come out. I don't feel good about mucking with anythign that supports the case head either, so I'm not rusign into anything.

Facotry ammo feeds slick as snot, factory bullets, pulled and them seated into new brass does not. Seems simple, but we will see...

Gatehouse; what kind of dies did you end up with? Can you not get more of a crimp with what you've got? Or maybe a different bullet is the answer. One with a groove to crimp to...

Like I told you I've got a Lee Collet (neck sizer) set that's spare, but I just read the instructions and it says 'this die will not crimp the bullet in place' so they might not be any better for you on this issue. Still yours if you want them..

Or barring finding a crimp die and all these other ideas you could put those 10" pipes you've got for arms to use and work that bolt! I'm sure it will feed one way or the other. :p

I have no problems feeding handloads in mine; though I always put a slight chamfer on my cases (inside and out).

Some say not to 'sharpen' the case mouths; and I agree that you shouldn't overdo it. But a little chamfer on the inside and out I've found (with several rifles) really aids feeding. And it also aids bullet seating, especially with flat base bullets. No more copper shaving.

I ended up getitng the LEE deluxe set wiht the collet neck sizer and the FL and the Seating die, but since I rarley use LEE dies, I didint' relaize that the seating die doesn't put a crimp on your case if you wish one (they want you to buy a Factory Crimp Die, which I have not located yet):)

Prosper- I generlaly chamfer al the new brass, so this stuff has been chamfered- still jams on the outside lip. I am reasonably confident acrimp will fix it.:)
