well just lookin to see what people are using for 30-30 bullets, i have been using winchester 170gr. silver tips in my winchester mod.94 and it seams they don't have any where i buy my ammo, they have all kinds of others, and with whitetail season opening on the 28th, i'm just wondering what i should go with.

I couldn't beat the accuracy i got from federal 170g powershocks even with most handloads. i stopped reloading for 30-30 because of them... saw no real benefit. To me that is the measure of a cartridge.

When I was a young man just starting hunting in NS, the local deer hunters in our social circles often prefered Silvertip ammunition.
I asked my best friend what type & weight of bullet his father used and he showed me a box of factory 30-30 in 150 grain Winchester Silvertip.

I've used the 150 Rem CoreLokt, 150 and 170 Silvertips, and Speer 150 and Hornady 170 handloads. Any load made for larger game works fine. Consider that the original .30 WCF was 160 grains at 1950 f.p.s. out of a 26-inch barrel and all our loads are pretty stout by comparison.

I got my Dad's old JC Higgins .30-30 last fall. It is a Marlin 336 rebranded for Sears way back. With it came a bunch of Federal 170 grain ammo. That stuff has been ridiculously accurate. I've picked up Hornady 170 grain Interlocks that I will be loading over Reloder 15 once the Federals have all been used up.

well my 30-30s are truck guns or camp guns so they are intended for use at short range only. I find that a good heavy round nose bullet, the rounder the better seem to feed best and at short range they have plenty of energy. I've done some reloading but never found a really good bullet that I liked, and factory rounds are cheap enough and I keep finding them all over the place. (like in my old truck glove compartment, in my hunting trailer, my hunting bag, etc.... :) )
