Hi there! I am new to reloading and would like to take advantage of the fact that I shoot 30/30 from a Savage 340 bolt action. I was looking at using Hornady 150 gr spitzer. Of course noe of the reloding data I find has this particular load. I was wondering where to start from. I am looking to use
H4895 or varget powder (once I get my hand on some) and CCI large rifle primers. Should I start at a load for a similar grain bullet or should I look at starting with the FXT bullet data?

Looking for input here from those who have been doing this for a while and have experimented with loads not in the books. How do you choose a start point!

Thanks

the bearing surface on a spire point vs round nose is reduced, I would just start a grain or 2 below max for your powder/bullet weight and work up to about 2350ish velocity.

The Hodgdon Data Manual No. 26 shows that 31.0 grains of IMR 3031 powder will drive a 150 grain bullet to a MV of 2184 fps, and 33.0 grains of IMR 3031 will drive a 150 grain bullet to a MV of 2364 fps.

The same source shows that 30.0 grains of H4895 powder will give a 170 grain bullet a MV of 1919 fps, and 32.0 grains of H4895 will give the 170 bullet a MV of 2212 fps.

I load for a Savage 340 using IMR4064 and H335. Using Winchester 150g psp's power points I get 2360 fps with 4064 and 2400 using H335. I have loaded it hotter, but have become more conservative. The rifle has shot a lot of Remington 125g psp's and H335 at a 2650 fps. It is real good to 250 yards. I have had 3 of these rifle over the years and they all seem to like IMR4064, or H335.

My go-to powders in the 30-30 Winchester with 150 grain bullets is IMR 3031, but I have had excellent results with W748 as well. Regards, Eagleye.

I am loading for a 340 30-30 and it loves this combo.

PRVI 30cal 150gr SP, Varget, Fed 210M primer, Win brass. Has given me 1" 3rds groups at 100yds using the orig sights.

Plenty good for my uses. haven't chronied the load yet.

You definetly have an advantage with a box mag fed rifle. I have started doing some basic reloading with 30-30 rounds for my Winchester 94. Havent played around with may loads yet, but I seem to get okay results with my once fired winchester brass, winchester primers, Remington soft points and IMR 3031.

Load for the bullet weight. The rifle(bolt action) or the make of the bullet doesn't matter.
The .30-30 out of a bolt action can be scary accurate. Far moreso than out of any lever action.

The H335 load that Snowshoe posted is almost exactly what I use. I use the Winchester 150 power point exclusively as most of the others that I checked on required a higher MV to get proper terminal expansion.

Try Reloder 15, you will not be dissappointed! it is a very accurate powder and is by far the best i've used in the 30-30. very high velocities also! it is what the U.S. military uses for it's long range target competitions now.

I have loaded for 2 Savage 340 rifles in 30-30, using all types of powder and bullets and never could get better than 1.5 MOA. I have another one now and will try again. They make great ATV rifles.

I have got very good accuracy from all the .30-30's I have loaded for. Some took some work to find the load they liked, but all shot a 1" group at 100 yards in the end. I had one that I almost gave up on when a friend said change the scope and try again. It was the scope causing the problem. That said I don't like the scope mount set up for the Savage 340, and the only one I have left has no scope, and it will stay that way. For only a little more money I got a Stevens 200 in .25-06, and it wears a scope like it should be.

Some reloading manuals (Hornady) have 30-30 listed in the handgun section and load spitzer's the data looks like it has slower velocity but that is due to short test barrels. The pressure range sould be safe for rifle's. Hope this is useful.
