was looking in the gun locker a few weeks ago....... and saw in the corner a 30--30 ive not used or looked at in many a year...
i had to order up a bunch of brass and dies and a box of bullets to remedy this...(thanks for the deal Doug;) )...
gun is a winchester model 94..
favourite recipies all?

My pre 64 Winchester would put 3 shots touching at 50 yards with open sights, using 170g Sierra's pushed by 33g of IMR 4064, Win brass and primers. That load ran at 2185 fps, and with brass all the same weight only varied 10 fps. I found a huge range in weights with .30-30 brass, so I weighed all my brass, and sorted them into lots. Have fun.

30-30 recipe

Suggest you check out Hodgedons new site. All the loads you need right there and up to date to boot. I found a listing that even rated 3031 for my 223. Wasnt the 3031 originally developed for the 30-30? Read that somewhere.

34.1 grains of reloader 15 is alliants max load for the 170 grain. It's also the most accurate load I've ever fired from my 1971 30-30.
NOTE: this load is hot, it's a true max load, and I found it stretched brass in my older rifles.
I managed a .75" group with the load once. Had my wife for a witness.
I'd bet I can't do that again!

I don't actually USE that load for hunting. I don't need that power. The load I used to take the bull moose with was a dose of 4895 (29 grains) under a Hornady 170 grain interlock. It's quite accurate, and doesn't stretch the crap outa my brass in any of my guns.
With that load, I can neck size.
TIP:
If you can neck size only the top portion of the neck, the bullet will be less likely to be pushed back in the tube mag.
When neck sizing for a 30-30, be sure to run all your cartridges through the chamber once before you take them hunting, in case of tight fit.
Most tight fits, can be squeezed home anyway, but not something you want to be doing when hunting.

Nope, originally made for the Mk.VII Z, 303 British.
Z, pertaining to the use of Nitrocellulose, instead of cordite.

in my 30WCF, 32 grains 3031 and a hornady 170 grain bullet in remington brass equals the remington factory stuff for velocity. in federal and winchester brass, velocity is approx 40 fps higher.

...x2.
Works for about 2200MV with 170SpeerFN outa my 16" tube trapper - awesome!
Winchester 748 is a great powder for the old 30-30. :)
That's what I use, over WLP primers and 36 grns of powder. That's in my Marlin 336. My buddy uses the same load in his 336 with the exact same results.

I used max loads of RL15 with the Rem CoreLokt 150 and withthe 170 Hornady. The 150 load (36 gr) was most accurate in 3 rifles..a 336, a savage 340 and a Win 94.
My current rifle is a 336A in .30-30 Ackley, it shoots the 150 Sierra flatnose and the 170 Hornady equally accurately using RL15.
