30/30 Win 94 -Berry's?
Hello, maybe someone can help?
I purchased (1000) 150gr, non-cannelure,copper plated, flat nose Berry's bullets for my Win Lever 94 ( just to punch paper,as the rifle was a gift).I have the following reloading manuals: Lee 2nd, Hornady 7th, Nosler 6th, Speer 14th, & Lyman 49th. All of these books have starting loads at roughly 1900fps. Berry's website tells us not to push them past 1700fps(& crimp w/ cannelure),furthermore, i have the following powders on hand: IMR4831, Varget, H335, RL-22, RL-15.
Obviously, I didn't do my homework, my question is, what powder will give me the lower speeds i'm looking for without ruining accuracy? I have read TrailBoss & BlueDot on other ,somewhat, related posts? Thanks for responding, if anyone knows! SgtRock
 
Start with 32 gr of IMR 4831 for a velocity of 1700 (Speer Nr 11) with this bullet and let us know how it turns out.

Or page 141 of Lee edition II gives 22 gr of H335 for velocity of 1670fps.

Interesting. From their website:

Plated bullets occupy a position between cast bullets and jacketed bullets. They are soft lead, but have a hard outer shell on them. When loading plated bullets we have found best results using low- to mid-range jacketed data in the load manual. You must use data for a bullet that has the same weight and profile as the one you are loading. Do not exceed mid-range loads. Do not use magnum loads.

Then then they say this:

We recommend using hard cast load data or start with mid-range jacketed data. Make sure data is below 1250fps unless you are using a Thick-Plated bullet that we list a higher max velocity for like the 9mm 124gr HBRN-TP that can be shot to 1500fps in open class guns like a .38 Super. Keep in mind that since our plated bullet has the same pressure curve as a hard cast bullet, the published cast data will be very close to what you will get with our plated bullets. If you use Jacketed data with our plated bullets you can get from 5% - 8% increase in velocity using that data.
I'd contact them and ask, 'Do I use mid to high end 150 grain lead data (lots of options here) or low end 150 grain jacketed (for which there is little to no data) that stays under 1,700 fps?'

Unique 7.5 grs. 1333 fps. 11.0 grs. 1691 fps.

I've run several hundred of those bullets through my mod94 in front of 10gr of Trailboss. Haven't chronied them, but I would guess around 1300fps I'll make a point of bringing them next time I have the chrony out. It's a very mild load, but accurate enough to hit a 5 inch plate every time offhand at 75yds and thats what they were meant for. I also take them out when I take the wife to the range, or when I'm bringing kids out to try shooting for the first time.

I don't know if you could get enough Trailboss in the case to get to 1700fps
 
Ok I have some preliminary results @ 25yds w/ iron sights: H335- 21.5 grs @ 1611fps was best group approx. 1.5", next was Alliant 2400- 16grs @ 1780 fps 1.5-1.75" , bringing up the rear was TrailBoss- 8.8 grs @ 1245fps 1.75-2.0"( way to light, much like .22LR!) I have to deal with the iron sights before I can proceed any further. Thank You to all who helped! I appreciate it! SgtRock
