30-378 WEATHERBY owners experience, pros, cons. thank you

I have a Sako 995 in a 30-378!

Pros, well one key factor velocity, and down range energy

Cons, well you just do not need all that horse power.

Cons, can be finiky to load, but once you find it accuracy is good

111.0 grains of powder lots of bark, significant more recoil,

To date I have shot 2 animals with it, one deer and one bear, you can not question it effect, but you need good bullets TSX I would suggest.

If I had to pick between a 300 wm and a 30-378 the 300 wm woudl bring home first prize.

a 300 wby is a good in between and has only 200 fps behind that big brothers case.

or you could go with a 300RUM only a few feet per second slower velocity of a 30-378, brass is about the same as a 300 Win Mag comes in an Rem 700...

All wins to me...

The question you should be asking is what are the real world benefits of the 30-378 over the 300Win or 300Wby?

Look at a ballistics page and compare 180 grain bullets at 3400 and 3200fps. There is very little difference here.
Now compare the sleek 200-210gr bullets at 3000 and 3200fps....Check the downrange energy, velocity, and wind drift while your at it. No doubt the 30/378 is impressive at long range, but it will not "make" the 500 yard shot any easier than a 300Win or 300Wby.

I want brute power and velocity you say!

Here is the kicker.....
Compare the 180gr bullet at 3400fps (30-378) and the 200gr at 3000fps (300Wby) at 500 yards.
The 180 grain bullet has more drop, 30% more wind drift, less impact velocity, and about 400fpe less impact energy.
Use the 180grain in the 30/378 and be rewarded with less performance than the same guy with a 300win or 300Wby using a slippery 200 grain bullet....Surprised?;)

I think the answer to the 30-378 question revolves around heavyweight bullets at 500 plus yards.

I was in a gun store a few days ago, and the topic of ammo cost came up.
He said that a single box of 20 of 30-378 is now about $220!

I load my 300RUM with 200gr A-Frames at 3200fps this is a very accurate load but definately not a top velocity load this is now my do everything load.

When I first started loading my 300RUM I loaded 180gr Scirroco's @ 3380fps...

X-Fan I concure I also feel these bigger cases push the heavier bullets far better which is why I now only shoot the 200gr A-Frames for hunting everything with this rifle.
