Well, with the sunny days coming fast, this is time to get yet another rifle. It'll be mostly used for varmints (larger critters like coyotes, but occasional gophers and racoons too), and if it can double as a deer rifle, it'd be great too. That's why I've been looking at the M305 platform for some time now.

I know it is not recommended to use bullets heavier than 168 grains due to potential damage to the action (op-rod), but I was wondering how it would handle light varming bullets, such as the 110 grains Hornady V-Max.

Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

"...heavier than 168..." It's 180's in a Garand. I've never seen any rifle damaged by the ammo. In any case, 110 grain bullets are for the .30 carbine. They'll shoot out of any .30 calibre rifle, but you may have functioning problems with light bullets. Look at a 125 or 130 grain bullet.

I have loaded 110gr SP infront of 49gr (might be less, memory is fuzzy right now) of BL-C2 and it functions fine, have not had a chance to test for accuracy yet but it looks promising

I'd like to hear from anyone who tries the vmax in the m305 as well. Couldn't you just turn off the gas system (grenade launching mode) and cycle by hand if there was too little gas pressure?

I think that the original poster should consider how accurate he needs his varmint rifle to be. My .223 bolt action puts vmax into sub 1/2 moa groups, but I wouldn't expect that accuracy from the m305. In most cases the 305 should be plenty accurate, but if you plan to take extremely long shots it may become an issue.

I think calling in coyotes and ending up with a larger predator instead would really make the m305 feel reassuring! lol

Many a garand have had their op rods wrecked with 175gr, you'd be well advised to avoid even 175's, let alone 180's. There's a thread on the board right now about this.

The 110 VMAX was certainly not designed for the M1/M2 platform ;) It should work just fine in the M305.
