Would be interested in making a 30 cal rifle that shoots some of the heavier stuff , around the 220 grain area. ( I have a receiver of an old 308) . Thinking of the 30 BR . thought a 1: 8 twist would work. Has anyone had any experience with the 30 BR. All the info I found so far was for the 120 grainers. Any information is appreciated. Im open to other ideas as far as cal’ configuration from an old rem’ 308 receiver.
Another option was to create a 338 whisper based on the 308 head.
Not exactly sure how that would work but an interesting idea.

Thank you.

Down in the southern states some guys have been shooting 220 gr bullets in fast twist .30 cal barrels and whooping ass on the 6.5-.284 out to 1000 yards.

Just in the process of building a fast twist 300 Win. Mag. for 1000 yard competition. Barrel is a 30" long 1-9" twist and chambered for the 240gr Sierra MK seated to the base of the neck. Remington 700 blueprinted and bumped bolt, Brux barrel 1.250" dia x 30", Shehane MBR tracker laminate, Shehane barrel block, Jewell trigger. Reamer by PTG. Should be ready for test firing within the first weeks of november.

Why such a tight twist?

The 1-10 twist was designed for the 220 grain bullet.

The only reason I can see for the fast twist is the limitations of the 30BR case not giveing enough velocity to stabilise the bullet.

I have a Martini, chambered in 30-40Krag. I shoot nothing but 200 grain Sierras in it. It shoots better than I can hold it. I've also tried 220 grain bullets in it as well. They shoot just as well as the 200s right out to 400m.
I haven't tried any further.

I used to shoot HBR until a long term friend passed away and it kind of lost its shine. The rule of thumb then was to just barely stabilise the bullet with 1-15 twists up to 150 grains. Tighter twists just weren't as accurate.

Now that's just my observation, and I know that we all have them.

Now the 1-8 twist seems to be very popular in the 6.5, 223, 243 and 284 bores with heavy bullets, especially the VLD designs. I wonder if the 30BR would shine with this twist and VLD bullets.

Very interesting concept, especially as I like heavy bullets.

phisroy, your needs will be best met with a pattern 17 Enfield. need a bit more velocity behind that 220 grain bullet (ouch) then AI the chamber. These rifles were designed around the 220 grain load and have always had a reputation as fantastic shooters.

30 cals get very interesting once you start shooting 220 grain bullets.

The sage advice of shoot the heaviest bullet your rifle will stabilize is still true today despite the modern insistence on forgoing ballistics in favor of velocity.

Cheers

David there is (or was) an Ackley reamer 30-06 in EE

I am sure it is just what you need to make one for you, we could do it on my lathe, then of course we could do one for me too.

Plain old .308 Win. IIRC they were only getting about 2400 fps or less out of 30 inch tubes, but the high BC of the 220 gr Sierra bullet it would out shine the 6.5's at a higher velocity.

Thanks!

Do you know if they beat the 6.5x.284 in wind-bucking ability too?

I know an American who loves his 6.5, and I think he has even shot at Camp Perry with it.

He told he has beaten bigger and better calibers just by reading the wind better.

I wonder what the wind drift and drop is with the fast twist .308 Win, shooting 220 gr. bullets?
