Hi;

I have a M1A1, .30 cal folding carbine. Just wondering how scarce 18.5 inch barrels are for it? Would be nice to un-restrict it. Also looking for strip clips and a bayonet lug, which my front band assembly does not incorporate. Does anyone have a tip on good price ammo for it?

Very hard to find 18.5" barrel:D. I've got one with a 20" barrel!!! non-restricted greatness!!!!!! whoooo-hooo!!!!:rockOn: My father bought it back in the early 90's for $350!! Has passed it on to me!!!! she's my only keeper over the years.

Arky 1.

A suggestion.

Before you do anything, check to see how correct your M1A1 is in terms of markings etc.
I would not mess with a correct WW11 M1A1.

I would forget about a bayonet lug on an M1A1 carbine.

What is the barrel date and serial number?
There are stock markings that you might want to check for depending on the vintage of the gun.

Correct M1A1 carbines are not easy to find in Canada.

This M1A1 is an early gun 12-42 barrel dated serial number 123829.

The markings change a bit on the later guns, but here is an example of the markings that you want to look for.

'P' proof marking on the stock. (It could be in a different place on a later gun)

Ordnance crossed cannons escutcheon with IO. ...on the bottom of the pistol grip.

If that M1A1 paratrouper is original, you are nuts to even consider doing anything to it!!! It will probably be worth over 2K in good condition. Buy a non USGI or a beater with a crappy barrel and change it over. There is supposed to be an auto ordinance non-restricted .30 carbine coming out this summer as well as a non-restricted GSG .22lr version. Wait for one of those before changing out and destroying a very rare bit of WWII history. Oh, and not to mention that putting an 18.5+" barrel on one of those folders may not make it non restricted. I have heard that it is touch and go with those folders.

Cheers,

Ian

No bayonet lug is a very good sign in an "M1A1" - as far as ammo goes, I like the Fiocchi stuff, it comes in 50 round boxes - 'cause who in their right mind would only shoot 20 rounds through an M1 Carbine? I'm happy to hear the Auto Ord might be coming in Non-res form - the carbine is way too handy and useable to be restricted.
