30 grain Varmint Grenades in .223 Rem?

Barnes site shows two recipes for a 30 Grain on the .223, one for 4198 (which I have some of) and another for 2460 (which I don't).

Anyone tried the 30's on a .223 yet? How'd they shoot?

I grabbed a couple boxes when I was in P&D a couple weeks back. Figure I can always use them in a Hornet, if all else fails.

if the barrel is not rifled in 1 in 14 or 1 in 16 inches. might not shoot them all that well.most hornets are 1 in 16.if they spin to fast the light thin jacket will even seperate from the core causing them to self destruct.the berger bullet company recommends a 1 in 19 twist for their light varmit bullet.what does the barnes site suggest as the best for the twist for the varmit gernades.

Meh. They don't suggest a twist rate for these.

There is a 14 twist barrel that is supposed to be a Douglas on this one.

Gonna have to try a few and see, I guess.

Tried the 36 gr. v grenades in a 222 last summer, wasn`t to impressed. Accuracy was okay but expansion wasn`t great, gave the last of them to a buddy to try in his 223. As yet he hasn`t tried them. Haven`t seen the 30 gr. bullets yet but may give them a try when i can find some.

A good buddy of mine was shooting em with 22-250 for a while. As stated above the accuracy was acceptable but that devastating explosive power wasn't there. I've been hearing that the grenades can be finicky to load with .223, I'll be starting with the 50gr myself shortly.

from what i understand they are unreliable in the expansion department.some explode like they should and others will pass right thru with little or no expansion.

the 50gr are great if you have the twist. I have a 1 in 9 26 inch tube and i dont even bother with grenades anymore just because the 68 and 69 gr vlds are so sweet. although not nearly as fun to watch
