Hey guys so I'm looking to pick up a nice piece of glass for my .338LM project...ideally be shooting out to 1000-1500 yards. Question is what is the 34mm tube going to give me that a 30 can't besides more elevation adjustment? I was wanting a S&B 5-25 with the 34mm tube but with the way work is right now I think the $3800 price tag could be a bit of a stretch so I started looking at the Leupold mark 4 with 6.5-20x50mm with ffp....I have looked at a few different brands and this Leupold seems to fit the bill fairly well I think

Vortex just put out a book on rifle scopes, written by Reg Wales. It covers all makes and has a ton of information on what to pick for both short and long range.
Well worth the $25, before you buy the wrong scope.

The 34/35mm are really only going to give you more adjustment in your turrets. I have never really noticed much different in clarity or in low light. Usually the 34/35mm scopes are the flag ship scope of a company so they have the best glass in them.

I just got a copy! It's stellar:

If weight is an issue, go 30mm. If size is an issue, go 30mm. If you want the best potential clarity, light transmission and adjustment range, go 34mm. Larger erector lenses of a 34mm tube mean clearer picture, edge-to-edge. Will you actually notice this difference? Probably not. Elevation range is the main advantage.

Have you had a look at IOR?
I had a shoot with one a few weeks back and they are impressive, looks are a bit funky but built like tanks and may save you a good few $'s as well.

I actually found the mentioned Leupold for $1800 used with rings and caps which is really go me thinking about how much the 34mm is really worth to me....mostly it a good accurate gun and I wanted to put good quality glass and try my hand at some longer range shots....in the past I have sort of cheaped out on glass (Vortex which is good but I'm not sure if I trust them 100%)

And yes size and weight are considerations as the gun when I started was 10lbs and I'd like to keep it in that same ballpark as I would still like to be able to pack it into a spot to set up and target shoot or hunt. Picked up the vortex HD and wow, nice scope but who needs a gun....just sneak up on that elk and club it with the bloody scope.../that thing was HEAVY!!
