For the past few years I've been searching for my perfect rifle, not quite a target rifle, not quite a plinker, not quite a hunting rifle, but more of a hybrid that can do it all. I put together a few rifles that came close, but never quite hit the mark (Patriot 6.5 CM and Renegade 300BLK). Don't get me wrong, both amazing rifles, but just not the unicorn I was looking for. So I finally decided to pull the trigger on my perfect rifle. In short I'm looking to build something similar to the Q Fix Mini. Something light and portable that I can hunt with, but also shoot sub MOA groups at 100 yards and fun to plink with subsonics.

I have all the parts ordered, and will post my progress as I build.

The build starts with a Rem 700 action

I have a Bergara trigger that I'll start with but probably upgrade to TriggerTech. I also have a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6, but I do't think that's enough scope, so will probably upgrade to a Viper PST Gen2 2-10x32.

I decided to name the build Wicket

Lots of options, but Pristine looks really good. And going to a non-Rem700 platform means a would need a much more expensive barrel... Would rather spend more on the action than the barrel, but that's just me

Couple things…

The MDT LSS: is very short for a hunting rig. Unless your only shooting off a bi-pod or an arca attached Tri pod…

2-10x: go with the 3-15(or 5-25)… with a mid range Bolt gun you will not be hindered with going 3 or 5x base vs 2x but you will be happy when you need the extra magnification and it’s there for you. Also the PTS glass is night and day better vs the strike eagle… I own the 1-6x, 3-15x and 5-25x on various guns and for the price it can’t be beat.

Curious, what bullet are you thinking of for hunting? Or did you have a bullet in mind for the chambering???

Well it's a 300 blackout, so a supersonic ~110gr should give me plenty of energy at 100 yards for deer.
I have some Lapua 200 gr FMJBT Subsonic I'll be loading for subsonic target shooting.

Then some ~100 gr (?) with Trailboss for quiet plinking

Why not just go 308 Win. Supersonic 308 has better ballistics than supersonic 300blk (with the same length barrel), and 308 can very easily be loaded to subsonic. The only advantage 300blk has over 308 is the ability to cycle semi auto actions. Since this is a bolt gun project, that a non issue.

Because hes building the rifle he wants.

This is true. But it seems that the rifle he wants to build had specific objectives. Posting on a public FORUM usually means that some kind of conversation is expected. As a person who had the exact same objectives as the OP, and have actually built the rifle, I thought I would add my two cents. Thanks for yours.

I'll also echo this. You'll end up with a more versatile rifle if you keep all your parameters the same but go with a .308 instead of 300blk. Better ballistics with supersonic loads and no issues loading subsonic ammo all in exactly the same size action, same footprint, same size (AICS) mags. 300blk only really makes sense if you're trying to stay within the constraints of a small frame AR/gas gun.

I thought the same thing about the LSS' length and was going to suggest an XRS (the polymer panels are also nicer to the touch when it gets cold) but then remembered he was speccing a 10.5" barrel. There really isn't much out there with a longer forend than the LSS' (8") that isn't actually longer than the barrel (XRS is 12.5").

I would recommend at least a 16" barrel, 10.5" is nice but will be very limiting and you'll need a fixed stock. Go 16 inch and you can get a folder which will make it a bit nicer for mobility and you'll get some decent fps. I'll echo the above and between 308 and 300 blk there is no reason to do 300 blk (since we don't have 30 round mags.)

Unless its your dream to do 300 blk, 308 gives you the added advantage of factory availability in Canada.

I already have a 6.5 CM, two actually, so not super interested in another long range capable rifle. But I do like the smaller cartridge capacity size of the blackout, specially how most of what I'll be shooting will be subsonic.
And I'm selling a 6.5 with 19" barrel on MDT chassis, I did have a folding adapter for it, but again, would just prefer a micro rifle :)

Also keep in mind I'm in eastern Ontario, so no need for a deer rifle over 100 yards. Even the ranges here max out at 300 yards

For context checkout the Q Fix Mini (skip to 4:15)

Maybe confirm with the action maker but I thought these used SAVAGE small shank prefit barrels?

If you need a shorty prefit, pretty much anything is possible

PM or Email

Good luck with your build.

Jerry

####, you are correct

AND I have a Rem700 barrel coming from the US, hopefully I can cancel it, then get prefit, but then there's the wait time :(

So thanks for the heads up Jerry. Was able to put a hold on the action and then decided to cancel my order, really want thank Pristine for their great customer support. I would have loved to try it out but the project would have been to cost prohibitive with a custom action and a custom barrel.

So back to the original plan of using a Rem700 action, and found one here so it's on its way here.

ok well I guess I can see why everyone #### on your dream build lol, it wasn't thought out very well at all..

I'm working on my dream build, I have over 3k into a 6.5x53R Lee Enfield hahahaha (I'm not joking lol)

Well, everything was well thought out, but when I decided to go to Pristine over Rem700 action I didn't realize it used a rem700 footprint BUT a Savage barrel. Totally missed that.
That being said not really my dream rifle anymore, but more of a fun build that should become my favourite rifle.

But I am a bit surprise there was so little love for a 300 blackout bolt gun. I know it's not target caliber, but so fun and versatile. I had originally posted this in the General Firearm discussion thread but it was moved here.
