Im in the market for a new deer rifle. I had a Remington 710 in .270 Winchester but wasn't a huge fan.

I was down at a local shop and they had a Ruger American Ranch chambered in .300 Blackout.

I loved the feel of this lightweight short rifle right off the bat. I would love to buy it just to have but couldn't justify it.

So the questions is. Is a 300 Blackout round acceptable for Whitetail Deer in Ontario. Typically I shoot in open fields between 50-200 yards. I wouldn't ever be taking a further than that.

Does this round have enough power to successfully and ethically take a deer.

Here is the load data from a 16" barrel on Hornadys 110gr V-Max.

Test Barrel (")
Distance(yrds)Velocity(fps)/Energy(ft-lbs)
Muzzle. 2375/1377
50. 2232/1217
100. 2094/1071
150. 1939/961
200. 1833/820
250. 1711/715
300. 1596/622

Thanks for the input everyone.

The VMax is a terrible bullet choice for deer hunting. If you weren't a fan of the 270, the 300 Blackout should leave you even more uninspired. It's an anemic round and using it for hunting is nothing more than a fad for mall ninjas wanting to tweet nonsense on social media. :)

My opinion anyhow. Flame away.

I have no issue with the .270. It does its job. I wasn't a huge fan of the Remington itself though. Would prefer a short action however. Also considering .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor.

Looking for something light and maneuverable with relatively low recoil. I've got no issue controlling the larger caliber but low recoil would be nice.

Either of those would be a much more versatile and a better caliber for your needs. And yes, the Rem 710 is an abortion.

Something light with low recoil is a mathematical imposability. ;)

The Savage lightweight hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor fits your bill nicely. Really nice rifle IMO.

I haven't used it, but lots of people have. Might be best to see what the people with actual experience with the cartridge say.

The 110gr Barnes TacX bullet seems to be the top choice, which makes sense as it's purpose designed for hunting with the 300BLK. From what I know about that bullet/cartridge combination, it seems capable of 300 yard shots on deer. It should work well for your 200 yard criteria.

I have read about the TacX. It definitely does seem like a good hunting option. I'm curious to find out how many people on the forum have tries hunting with .300's
