Apparently a 338 Lapua case necked down to 30.
Anyone here have experience with this?
Might be interesting launching 220 and in particular 240 g SMK's.
Comments>?

I believe Richard (bulletsmith here) also has a .338 case necked to .277!
Give him a jingle, he is very helpful, and knows how to make an accurarte bullet!
He just delivered a bunch of heavy kacked 6.5 bullets to me that weigh an incredible 165 grains!
They are going into my 6.5WSM and my son's 6.5/284.

Richard knows how to make the .338 Lapua sing, for sure!

This shouldn't be terribly different form the 30-378 Wby. Both can trace their lineage back to the 416 Rigby case, although compared to the Lapua version, the wby offering has more freebore and an 'improved' case configuration with less body taper and a sharper neck for a modest capactiy gain.

You may want to consider the .300 RUM which is almost the ballistic twin of the .300 Lapua. The Lapua has a very slight edge in case capacity however the RUM is less expensive to build & feed. Both the RUM and Lapua cases are way overbore capacity for .30 cal. bullets as compared to the .300 Wby although the heavy 220 and 240 SMK's are better balanced in these cases combined with long barrels.

The Lapua and RUM cases really come into their power curve with the .338, .358 and .375 cal. bullets.

Do a google for 300 Tomahawk and Wolf. The Tomahawk is an improved 300RUM and the Wolf an improved Lapua. Popular if pushing 210 and heavier bullets.

Some use these in unlimited 1000yd BR and LR hunting.

I shoot a 300RUM and 220gr MK. Way cheaper and easier to set up. Equal performance to the 30 Lapua. No need for custom dies. Will look at 210gr VLD's this summer.

Now if the 338 Lapua becomes a fully supported NATO rd and the commercial actions start becoming less expensive, worth a look.

For now, the RUM family will do anything the Lapua can for 1/3 the cost of brass. In fact, a 300 Improved (think 30STW or 300Wby AI) can do some very impressive things with 210gr VLD bullets. Lots in use in 1000yd BR and these are shooting some amazing groups.

Richards bullets are very interesting indeed. I think for a 290gr I would think about a 30-416 Rigby Improved and 30" or longer barrel. Why not get them to 3000fps. Component/project cost is pretty much the same.

Just load with a bucket full of wet sawdust and fly at it.
