Do a google for 300 Tomahawk and Wolf. The Tomahawk is an improved 300RUM and the Wolf an improved Lapua. Popular if pushing 210 and heavier bullets.
Some use these in unlimited 1000yd BR and LR hunting.
I shoot a 300RUM and 220gr MK. Way cheaper and easier to set up. Equal performance to the 30 Lapua. No need for custom dies. Will look at 210gr VLD's this summer.
Now if the 338 Lapua becomes a fully supported NATO rd and the commercial actions start becoming less expensive, worth a look.
For now, the RUM family will do anything the Lapua can for 1/3 the cost of brass. In fact, a 300 Improved (think 30STW or 300Wby AI) can do some very impressive things with 210gr VLD bullets. Lots in use in 1000yd BR and these are shooting some amazing groups.
Richards bullets are very interesting indeed. I think for a 290gr I would think about a 30-416 Rigby Improved and 30" or longer barrel. Why not get them to 3000fps. Component/project cost is pretty much the same.
Just load with a bucket full of wet sawdust and fly at it.
