.300 magnum hunting/ long range target?

4.5 to 14 or so would work just fine.

Get a nice fine reticle and quality glass and you would be pleasantly surprised what you can hit at distance.

Remember 10X magnification appears 10 times closer.

Zeiss Conquest HD5 3-15x42 ($1,099 +tax) or 5-25x50mm ($1,249 +tax), either with the Rapid-Z 800 reticle. Bombproof construction, HD glass, lifetime, no questions asked warranty, and the rapid-z 800 reticle is designed for magnums like the 300 win.

Sightron SIII6-24X50 - we use these to shoot out beyond 1 mile. Plenty of mag when you have quality glass.

SII Big sky 6.5-20X50 is another gem of a scope in a 1" tube.

When hunting, my scopes are almost at 6X and I have smoked deer at short range.

You could look at the Leupold VX-6 line. They have a 6:1 zoom ratio and include zoom ranges 2-12, 3-18, and 4-24 which would suit your application. Bushnell also sells scopes in their Elite/Elite Tactical lines that have zoom ranges 2.5-16, 3.5-21 and 4.5-30. You just need to figure out what is more important to you a low magnification for close up or high magnification for reaching out.
