o.k. no luck last time. I'll try one more time.

I'm sooo close to buying my first moose gun (already have a deer gun)

But how do I test drive before buying ?


Does anyone (in the Greater toronto area) have a .300 win mag or .338win mag. in a semi-auto(oops, I mean self-loader) & that also, would allow me to shoot it :ar15: , so I can check it out before investing $ 1,000.00
I'll buy the ammo.

I'm only interested in these 2 calibres.

What are you shooting already?, if it's in the 30 cal group (308, 30.06 etc) I feel there's no sense getting another 30 cal, go for the .338. At least that's what I did. I'd offer you a try at mine but that would involve a plain ride!!!
 
unless your deer rifle is smaller than 6.5x55, there is no *need* for another rifle for moose, although I wont ever try to stop someone from buying a new rifle :D

why do you want a semi?

now, I only have my 30-30 (deer) & an old British 303, m4 # 1 or the other way around ? I prefer a good powerful, high energy, flat trajector type round.

I really don't think my 30-30 would do the trick, it's slow, lowe muzzle energy & trajectory is worse than me throw a 5 lbs. rock

Well, quicker follow up shots,if required (please don't say, you will not need one...etc.....) cause I've seen it & sometimes you do & you have the time for a quick one or 2 & yes a buddy of mine got the deer on the 5th round, he normally doesn't require more than 1, but did that day & he did it with a .308 semi.
2nd, the reduced recoil (during practise) would be nice for my petite frame, as I'm buying a win. mag.!

Moose can get well over 1000 lbs. that's a big animal

.30-30 has killed and continues to kill lots of moose every year. I wouldn't hessitate to use a .30-30 on a moose inside 200yrds with quality ammo.

a leveraction is MORE then fast enough for big game hunting (as is a bolt action)


If you really want a Semi-auto go for it. and choose the .338mag. your semi will soak up recoil, and you might as well go big, or go home.

Personally If I was a moose/deer hunter in Ontario I'd be buying a nice 7-08 or .308 Mountain rifle and be done with it.

What rifle are you thinking?

I am joining the club here though, a lot better hunting rifles out there than any semi I know of.

How many shots do you need at a moose with a 338? They are kind of hard to miss.
 
isn't the bar still the only 338 win mag around- if you do get one, remember they're a SUBSTANTIAL step up in terms of cost of ammo, bullets, powder( try 70 grains of the slow stuff a pop- means you only get about 100 rounds out of a pound) casings( 50 as opposed to 100 for the same buck) and maggie primers cost more

The 303 is more than enough for moose with a 180 gr.
 
Go with the .338 WM.

I grabbed one last year in a left handed remington 700 and I have to admit I'm impressed. I don't mind recoil, so it's okay for me. I also like the selection of .338 bullets out there.

How many are really taken at that distance. Most game is taken within 200 ....

I have a 257 wby and a 270 Weatherby, they are pretty flat shooting, but honestly I haven't shot at any game that I couldn't have just as easily taken with my 303 .....

But if you must have it, then go with the 338

A bolt or lever will still give you the opportunity to shoot more than once. As for recoil, invest in a good pad like Limbsaver or Pachmayr well worth the $40 and make a huge difference. If you need a semi, get the rem 750 in .35 whelen, as for magnums, buy the .300WM :)
