I am thinking of building a new 30 cal rifle. Just I am having a real toss up between the 300 PRC and the 300 Win. Would be a pure target rifle. Using a 700 action I have laying around.

Just in the markets for a barrel.

What would you do?
Specs and why.

Sendero profile 26" 1-8,1-9?

Thanks

Ballistically, a near wash, maybe slight edge to PRC. Wing mag has better factory ammo selection, but is a belted cartridge.

I couldn't see choosing the 300WM now that the PRC is available. The PRC is a much better designed cartridge, optimized for high BC bullets.

Yeah PRC is a no brainer. Guys will probably say their 300 win mag performs the same, but the PRC was designed for the high BC bullets. As far as twist, you'd probably need to decide how heavy you want to shoot out of it. There is a giant thread on the ELR forum of snipers hide all about the 300 PRC

I went PRC. To get a WM to do the same thing you need a custom throat, and maybe single feed. PRC is off the shelf rifle and long range ammo that uses the length too, if you want it.

No reason to go WM over PRC now, especially for a pure target rifle. There's good available factory match ammo (or Lapua brass if reloading) and the cartridge is optimized for the higher BC bullets.

Pure target I see no reason to go Win Mag. PRC is intended for that use case. A hybrid rifle could make a case for easy to find hunting ammo, and for a pure hunting rifle I'd go Win Mag all day and enjoy the cheaper ammo choices. But if every optimization and efficiency matters, the PRC is a better choice. I'd go with a 26", 8-twist barrel for optimum ballistics with the SUPER HIGH BC bullets in the 225+ range.

Seems to be some love for the PRC. I have a 300 win already so components are not an issue. But PRC components don't seem that difficult to find either.
At the local Cabela's they have the Hornady PRC 225gr for $79 a box. Which is actually cheaper than the 300 win. So a wash there.

1-8 26" or longer?
I plan on making it heavy for the ease of shooting. No real plan on using it for hunting. The 300 win will work for that.

26" is fine, no real benefit to go longer unless you're doing ELR, I have a 24" barrel and my velocities don't seem too affected by it.

I easily could if I was interested in not reloading every round I shoot, or someday decided I wanted to hunt with it. 300wm is far easier to come by, and with Lapua doing brass for 300wm I could live with its percieved limitations.

For a barrel, if i was genuinely just going to bench the rifle I would look at something heavier, like maybe palma or even thicker.
Call K&S in edmonton, get whatever profile or even custom twist you want.

Believe Long Range only.....YouTube channel did a test. Difference 《 100ft/sec. Basically within the margin of variance of fast or slow barrels. Really it's.going to depend on the cost and availability of ammo, and brass. If those costs go down it may push 300wm.

So many new calibers, some are.flash in the pan, others take off. Think Saum family vs Creedmoor.

300 PRC it is. Got some Lapua brass, some ELd-m and some Eld-x. Redding dies.

Jerry has a IBI 26" 1-8 Sendero or medium profile on the way.

Kool what stock will you use ? Trigger - Scope and rings . RJ

Haven't totally decided yet. I have a few parts around that should work.
B&C medalist,
Trigger tech special,
Heathern or APA brake.
MDT rail and rings. Undecided on scope as of yet.

Have a stash of 212 Eld-x and some 225 ELd-m, Lapua brass, Redding dies. A few boxes of loaded. Plus a decent powder selection.

So far I have found components to be less of a hassle to find and cheaper than the 6.5's
