Looking for data on making my own power level 1 loads for the 300 remington ultra magnum. would like to see 150-165 grain bullets at 30-06 velocity. Remington sells it so it must be possible.
Thanks

I've never owned a .300RUM but I did do a lot of reduced load tinkering with a .300WM I used to have. I stuck with H4895 since I knew it was perfectly safe down to a 60% load according to Hodgdon.

I checked data for .30-30 and .308 with the same bullet weight and H4895. I tried max loads of each but in .300WM brass. They both shot well but the .308 data shot better groups; I guess the better case fill made a difference. The larger case volume reduced velocity though since there was more room for the gas to go. I never chronied them but the .308 load dropped less than 1/2" at 100yds vs. full .300WM loads.

For .300RUM I'd look at H4895 load data for .30-06 and try a max load in .300RUM brass with a 150-165gr bullet. See what velocity it gives a you.

Slower powders can have serious ignition problems at reduced case fills. I chose H4895 because Hodgdon publishes the 60% data rule for reduced loads in any cartridge so I figured they must have confidence it's safe at 60%. A max .30-06 load should fill at least 60% of a .300RUM case; or so I assume.

Its not down to 30-06 levels; but IMR 4350 and a 180 reduces recoil far more than you'd ever expect while not giving up much in speed. Hang around the starting loads and you just might get the reduced recoil level you are seeking.

I tried it mostly because of a little blurb in the Nosler manual that talked of the extreme accuracy they were getting with a seemingly unlikely powder choice. They weren't kidding.

I pulled a managed recoil and it contained 50 grs. of black sperical powder, they shot pretty good in mine.I couldn't find any data on H4895 but did find a trailboss load for 180 gr win silvertips at 1840 fps with 28 grs.
Hodgdon manual lists a reduced load for 300 weatherby but not the RUM in H4895 and trailboss.
Maybe try email hodgdon,s for something in H4895.

Tear down one of the rounds to get a grain count. Then research which powder comes in that particular cartridge. And boom You got your reduced load data. If you do get the recipe, a fellow like me would be grateful if you’d share it.
