I have an older 99 in .300, with the roll mag. I was wondering if it could be reamed out to .358 Win. What do you think this would cost if it could be done.

Give me the serial number, If it is from before the 308 was released it won't work, after the 308 it will work fine. Serial number for 308's started about 750000. You will have to change the rotor out for a 358 rotor, you can find them on ebay occasionally. Real PITA to ream the rotors. Les

Not sure on that Les.

Never seen a 308 in the 700's yet but "never say never".

The 700's would make it a 1955 production but the 308 didn't hit the 99 till 1956.

I think even the pre-mil 99's in 300 Sav cannot be made into the 358 conversion.

Finding a 358 rotor is gonna be the hard part in that project.

What's wrong with 300 Savage?

Is it not powerful enough for what you want it to do?

300 Savage is both a

and an

The .300 is a great round but I have a few 30's and this one has found the back of my safe so I thought I might try to give her a new lease on life and I don't own a 35 cal.

I ahve a older remington 722- has a new remingto nstock as old one broke whne i lent it out
but may have to consider gettign borede out to a 358

Make sure you've got enough meat in the barrel left after a rebore so that the wall thickness is enough.

I think I'm screwed on my Savage 99 308-358 convrsion, the barrel will only have 0.111 wall thickness after the rebore, I think a smith needs .125 to call it safe but haven't asked one yet.

Joe, you can likely rebarrel with an adams and bennett barrel for cheaper/easier... for the 99...

Though I may be wrong...

Dan, no you need a 358 rotor and 358 cartridge guide.

I've got the 358 rotor, just gotta find a cartridge guide but I might be able to modify a 308 cartridge guide to work. It's the rotor that you really need, you can't really modify the 308 rotor to work, it's been tried but then it only rolls for 3 shells and binds alot.
