I've been given advice from several CGN's on suitable-ideal powders to use for re-loading the 300 Savage,Thank-you.But I'm confused now,If the 300 Savage has a case capacity similar to the .308 Win. then why would'nt H380 be a suitable powder to load along with 165gr bullets :? :?:
Am I missing something here? H380 seems to be an ideal powder for 150,165 & 180gr bullets in a 308,then why is it suggested that I use H4895,IMR4895,IMR4064,IMR3031 etc,etc..........
Could I not simply reduce the charge for the 300 Savage :?:
I appreciate all your comments & opinions,

I use H380 in my 308. I don't have my load data right here in front of me.

As far as the 300 Savage, from the 4rth edition Hornady:

H380
130gr bullets, from 41.5 to 47.2gr
150gr bullets, from 39.1 to 44.7gr
165gr bullets, from 34.6 to 43.4gr
170gr bullets, from 33.8 to 43.7gr
180gr bullets, from 32.3 to 41.1gr

Now, H380 may not give you top velocity, 4064, 3031, and others will give you maybe 100 to 200fps more velocity, but give H380 a try if you have some. You may be pleasantly surprised at the accuracy. It sure meters nice too.

The fact of the matter is you can use H380 if you want--if you do research into the suggested loads for the .300 Savage, you will find that 4064 and 4895 and sometimes 4320 are usually recommended as the first choices for fast accurate loads in the .300 savage and 150 - 165 bullets. From personal experience this is the case. I have tried many of the suitable powders in my .300's and always come back to 4064 in my particular rifles. Something like Varget should work really well also, but I have not had a chance to try it.

Try the H380 and if it works for you thats great (let us know how you make out with it).

This is the reply I got from Hodgdon's:

H380 is too slow burning for the 300 Savage.

I will however give it try using the information provided by 'joe-nwt',
Thanks Joe
I had my hands on some Varget lastnight but put it back on the shelf, more research required :!:
Thanks fellow Gunnutz for your help thus far :)

H380 is a pretty slow powder, pretty much along the lines of H414. Hodgdon doesn't list loads for it in .308 or .300sav http://www.hodgdon.com/data/rifle/300sav.php
http://www.hodgdon.com/data/rifle/308win.php
I know it works allright in .308 as I've used it, but it's not the best choice by far. The slower powders in small case, medium bores don't fair too well as they don't build up pressure fast enough. I was at near max in .308 before I got a good gas seal, but velocity was pretty poor compared to a half dozen other powders I've used.
If it's all you got and you want to burn it up, go for it, it's just not the best choice is all.
