I'm looking for a load for .300 Savage, for use in a Savage Model 99.

I was planning on using IMR4895, although I also have Varget and D4895. Bullet will be Hornady ELD-X 178gr. Primers will be CCI BR2.

The Hodgdons website only lists a MAX load of 38.5 gr IMR4895, no starting load.

I can find lots of loads for 150gr bullets, but not for 175gr or close thereto.

Something close to commercial loads is what I'm looking for. Thanks up front!

Speer #10 manual use 180gr data 34gr-IMR 4895/2079fps 36gr-2211fps + 38gr -2336fps MAX Ken Waters PET Loads says 38gr most accurate and approaches MAX [standard primers for all]

I used exclusively Win 748 in mine with mag primers for ball powder 42gr/150gr...............41gr-165gr...............40gr -180gr

Thanks Mbogo. I found my Speer #9 manual just now, and it lists the same. Should've thought of that book- it's right on my shelf. I'm too used to finding my info online.

Word to the wise.........don't trust online data unless it's from the manufacturer. Glad I could be of assistance.

HMM ! thats a Pretty LONG bullet for a 300 Salvage in a M99 rifle ! RJ

A great resource for older cartridge's that have a history is Ken Water's Pet Loads. I find some of the newer load books are lacking on the old favorites and Ken's book goes over most of them in great detail with a lot of different loadings.

you might not get good accuracy with the eld bullet ... its very long and might not stabilized in the model 99

I could be wrong, let us know

A 1-12 twist will stabilize a 180 gr SP but if other styles have a longer bearing surface ,hard t say as well bullets will have to be seated to fit the magazine reducing case capacity and powder charge accordingly.

Nice! I always found if I glass bedded the last 1" of the forend tip and tweaked the forend screw all 99's I owned would shoot into an inch at 100 yards with handloads usually less.A lightly oiled ammo cardboard flap or business card cut to fit also works. One is permanent the other reversible.Seems to require a little upwards tension to perform so why argue with the gun.

I have a good load with Ram Shot Tac and the 165 grain Hornady Interlock. My notes say 40.3 grains, CCI LR primer, 2482 fps (actual), SD - 14, ES - 28, shoots about 3/4" at 100. Keeping it iron sights, will be my bear stand gun

OP - If you use the Hodgdon max load data, knock 10% off for your min load. Just so you know, the 300 savage is a short necked 308. (Purists will say that its the other way around - 308 is a long necked ...!) When you get into long heavy bullets like the 178 ELDX, you lose a fair amount of case capacity, and powder charge. You can see this by comparing 308 load data at that bullet weight. From my own experience with guns like the 760 and 99, the flat base 150 and 165 grain bullets give the best combination of accuracy and terminal performance. (and save money compared to the very expensive ELDX!)
IMR 4064 has been my go to powder for these bullet weights, but 4895 would offer similar performance.

Correct, it's a shortened .06 case with short sharp shoulders and a short neck (think AI). The makers didn't think the neck & shoulder, would allow it to function properly under semi/fully auto use. They then tried a less sharp shoulder and longer neck, resulting in the .308 Win
