How far out would you shoot a moose with one? I was thinking probably out to 200 yards would be fine. Anyone one the board shoot a moose with a .300 savage?

Dave.

I'm going to work up a load with 165 grain partitions as a back up gun to my 375 Ruger for this fall. My '99 belonged to my Grandfather and definitely has more than a few moose on it. I'm going to keep things within 200 yards and I have complete confidence in the cartridge. Bullet placement and bullet construction are key

When i first picked up a 300 savage cartridge i immediatly thought it was a .308 until i looked at the bottom of the brass. I've never killed anything with one but seeing as how it seemed so similar to the 308 i'm sure it'd be fine out to 300 yards.

my first rifle was a 300 savage , and i had no problem with moose with it .

the best all round load for it was a hornady 165grain boat tail on top of some imr 4064 .

for all intents and purposes it is no different than a 308win as far as effective range .

i wouldn't hessitate to take a poke at a moose in the 300-400 yard range with it .

I knew a bush homesteader who shot moose (plural) every year for 25 years with a SAvage 99. Only his was a 250-3000.

Wifes uncle uses a savage 99 that I am sure the bore now measures .350. He has killed many bull elk and moose with it. I hunted with him this past fall and I will guess none of his shots were over 200 yards. He doesn't know or care about super fast or ultra magnums. He can however tell you the hair in which he was aiming for. End result.....dead stuff.

One of my hunting partners uses a .300 savage on everything - including moose and elk and I have never seen him lose one. He shoots 180 grain bullets.
