I currently own a .300 Savage but I have always wanted a .308 ever since I was a kid. I mostly deer hunt with shots no further than 300 yards and that is an extreme range which I limit my shots to 250 yards . Most shots are between 30 and 80 yards. I also Moose hunt every second or third fall and shots well they can be unlimited in distance but like I said 250 yards maybe 300 for moose.

Trade the .300 Savage and upgrade to a .308 or,

I'm not gaining a whole lot, stick with the .300 Savage

Is it fair to say that power difference would be comparable to the difference between a .308 and a 30-06?

No

The difference between the 300 and the 308 is a lot less than that between the 308 and the 30-06.

Anything the 308 will do the .300 Savage will do just as well.

I have used both on deer and not a lot of difference between them. On moose, the .308 might have a slight advantage. If you handload, I would work up a load with a premium 165 grain bullet (maybe 150 barnes) and go for it.

shoot what you are comfortable with!if you are reloading there is a a bout 200fps.diff between them using 110gr .(308)faster 150gr.no velocity diff. 180 gr. there is 100fps.faster (308) .30-06 out preforms both reloading .factory ammo the differance is not as noticable. why change what is workin for you ? magnum or case size just gives a wider range to reload to.

I own both, and I agree there is no practical difference.

But who are you fooling, you are asking the question because you want one, give in to it. Wanted one since you were a kid, enough said go for it, you have my blessing.

There is a slight diff between the two but a deer will never notice.
If you want to upgrade go to a 06, 300sm or 300wsm & use it for moose.
Keep the old 300s for deer if you like it & are confident using it :)

well personaly i have never shot a 300 savage but i would have to agree that there isnt enough differnce ballisticly to be too concerned about
now if you are interested in a 308 i just happen to have a nice lever up for sale in the EE

In my own experience, there is no difference to speak of between a .300 Savage and a .308 Winchester. But I did see that the .300 Savage rifles generally preferred a 165 grain bullet for accuracy, and many of my .308s preferred a 180 grain bullet. As somebody said already (I think) the deer is just as dead with either.

And I am not a believer in .30 cals for moose. Yes I know that zillions of them have been shot with .30-30s, .300 Savages, .308 Winchesters, .30-06 Springfields etc etc etc etc. No offence to anybody.

Just for discussion sake, I thought a 30 cal was ideal for moose???
correct me if I am wrong but aren't some of the 30 cal selections also the 300mag 325WSM 338mag 375 H&H or do these fall into a different category?
I also realize that these are magnums but if they fall into the 30cal category then from what I have read, these are more than ideal??? Don't take me the wrong way I am not bashing anyone for their oppinions as to each their own.

Thanks for the replies and I have decided to keep the M99 .300 savage
since I'm not gaining much more with the .308 and the .300 Savage is a classic.
I just seem to go through wanting a new gun every now and then.
Maybe I'll go buy a 223 and take up varmint blasting!

No, While the .300 mag is a .30 calibre the 325 is an 8mm, the 338 is a 34 calibre and the 375 is even larger at .375"

While there is nothing at all wrong with using a .30 calibre - or smaller - on moose like Doug I have found after shooting the damn things for over 30 years that a bigger hole lets them bleed out faster so they drop sooner.

For what it is worth I am a bit of a .30 calibre junkie myself  so if a 308 floats your boat I would find nothing wrong with owning one of them along with your 300 Savage.

depends what '30 cal' you're referring to. the 30-30 is far from ideal as a moose round, but a 300WM is certainly adequate. Yet both shoot a 308. It totally depends on your usage. 30 is certainly the most popular, but so is 7mm. And then, of course 33's on up.

I guess I should have been more exact in my wording. I do not favour standard .30 cal chamberings for moose. I named some of the ones I would not willingly go hunt moose with. I have the luxury of choice, of course, and if I were a one-gun hunter then by golly I might be a BETTER hunter too! No 300 yard shots with a .30-30, so you gotta close the gap.....or whatever.

Any of the .30 cal magnums are more than adequate for my taste, including .300 Win Mag, .300 Wby Mag, .300 H&H Mag, .308 Norma Mag, etc etc.

A .325 WSM (does this exist?) is an 8 mm, not a .30 cal, and the .338/.375 are similarly well north of .30 cal.

As todbartell points out, there are lots of sub-.30 cal cartridges that have shots lots of moose too, including the three he mentioned. And FWIW I would use a 7 mm Mag before I would use a .30-06, for example. Anyways, there is nothing like a comparison thread to get gun folks yapping.........

Well thanks fella's for explaining that for me! Gotta learn somehow.
Chances are I can borrow a 7mm for moose if I am moose hunting in the cuts and close range bush my .300 Savage should do the trick.

I have got an elite 3200 2x7 on it wich does pretty good out to 250.
I need a little more practice shooting off hand at that distance though!
Don't we all

How close can the .308 be safely loaded to the same ballistics as the 30-06? ( I know, if I want a .308 to shoot like a 30-06 then I should buy one, but .308 is easier to say;) )
