300 Savage?

almost like a 308

150 gr. @ 2650 fps

good for deer out to 250 yards and moose with 180's at moderate ranges

Winchester, Federal, and Remington all make ammo (150 & 180 gr.)

for sure a Classic cartridge!

This is my 99F in 300 Sav, wouldn't trade it in on anything and is always the first gun in the truck for deer season.

Closest thing to the 308 in any of the Savage offerings, better in my book, and I own 308's as well. If you ever wanna get rid of it gimme a holler.

The one I now have is a little more worn than this one MD but this makes for a fine hunter. The problem is, the guy I got it from said he had a 300 winchester magnum, I was a bit disappointed when I picked it up and it wasn't the cal I was gearing up for. Oh well, one more toy for my shoosting pleasure.......

What model is it Gilly?

Does it have a schnobel forearm, a semi-beavertail forearm or just a round tip forearm like mine?

If it's a 99F it'll have it stamped on the right side of the barrel.

I also use a Savage 99 in 300 Savage for hunting. Like Todd says its almost the same as a .308. I handload and my preference is for 150 gr. bullet with 39 grains IMR3031 powder. It's getting more difficult to find store bought ammo so save those cases for future reloading possiblities.

It has the schnable forearm, all it says on the right hand side of barrel is 300 savage.

Your powder selection isn't the best for the .300 and 165's. IMR 4895 or 4064 or Hogden equivalents would be better--I have had good success with imr 4064 and 165's in several of my .300's.

These are the left overs from when I had a 30-06.
Accurate 2520 seems to be a suitable powder, but I was just curious if these powders(H380 & IMR4198)would work for me,I can always change bullet wt.
Cheers,

Huntsman :)

Hornady manual likes IMR 4064 and IMR 3031 a lot. If you look at their chart 4064 is probably the most versatile if you want near max loads with different bullet weights. (39 gr. 3031 and 150 grain bullet has been pretty good for me.) H 4198 is even faster than 3031 and is shown on the chart only for 100 gr and 130 gr. bullets. These are not the bullets you want for deer hunting. They are short little tugboats and may also have the wrong expansion characteristics. (Certainly the 100 gr. Hornady is meant as a varmint bullet.) Another powder that looks pretty good on the charts is H4895. I have personally tried 45.5 gr. Win 760 with 150 gr. bullets but results were not quite on a par with my 3031 load. If I was going to buy a new can of powder for a 300 Savage I would choose IMR 4064 or IMR 3031.

4895 would be my pick if I was to load a 300 Savage

it works well in the 308, and the 300 Savage is pretty close in powder capacity to that

This is a post that I replied to on another forum regarding the .300 savage.

"I took Ron's advice and picked up some IMR 4895 and some 150gr Nosler partitions.

I found my most accurate load was 41grs of IMR 4895 which grouped under 3/4 inch at 100 yards on a solid bench.

I found My deer hunting load.

I don't have access to a chrony so I am not sure how many FPS the bullets were travelling out of a 20inch barrel model 99E"

I believe the 150gr Nosler partition would be travelling around the 2650fps.

.300 Savage

I have used IMR 4895 and 150 grain Hornady SP with great success. Reloader 15 is also a great powder and recommended for the 165 grainers. I will be trying H4895 in several cartridges, including the .300 because it is very temperature insensitive.

The .300 is a great caliber.
