I have been offered a 300 weatherby magnum in a vanguard s1, what do you fellas think of this cartridge for hunting deer and moose when I get a tag. I would be trading away a rifle that I don't care for much for it. I hunt any place where there is game woods or clear cuts

I can't comment too much on the 300 Weatherby magnum, but I do own a savage 11 chambered in 300 Winchester short mag and have shot a 300 Winchester magnum through most of my childhood. Both of which I can consistently get 1" spreads at around 150 to 200 yards, and I'm not the best shot. It's a great gun if you need to reach out. When it comes to ballistics, the Weatherby is superior to the Winchester. I was personally leaning towards the Weatherby when I bought my short magnum because of the extra little reach it has and more ammo options, but they're considerably more expensive. I've never used the Vanguard S1 but have heard good things about them. Take a look at some online reviews. I know if you're looking to knock a moose down at long ranges you won't be disappointed.

300 Wbee is the FINEST 30 cal MAGNUM cartridge EVER ! :d  jmo RJ

I've had a few .300 Weatherbys, and I don't even know how many 300 Wins anymore. I prefer the Win for
reasons of practicality and universal availability. In the field and handloaded there really isn't a dime"s
worth of difference between them; esp when the Vanguards have 24" barrels and 26" Wins are all over the place. With factory loads the Roy does pull ahead, but you will likely never be able to
tell the difference.

That doesn't make the weatherby a bad cartridge (it's actually a great one), but it's hard to be enthusiastic about more recoil
for exactly nothing. It has a rich history for what that's worth. The biggest drawback is you are required to say "Nuttin shoots flatter, hits harder........... etc after every game animal is shot. It takes awhile to learn to keep
a straight face saying that, but its really a minor inconvenience. I'll be keeping mine.

A trigger job on that Vanguard will fix it right up. It's a good design, they just should have spent a couple more minutes and finish building it.

Just be prepared to change the trigger to a Timney. The stock trigger is notoriously horrible.

Bah, you dont need to, but you may want to change the spring in the S1.
But, having said that its your choice and taste when it comes to the 300 Wby Magnum.
Nothing Shoots Flatter or Hits Harder than a Weatherby Magnum ;)
What are you trading from to get the Weatherby.
I would guesstimate the Wby Vangaurd in the 500 to 600 dollar range...for what that opinion is worth.

We had the choice and went with the generic 300 win mag.
We don't hand load any more since we greatly downsized our combined arsenal 3 years ago and sold off or exported stateside most of our non-restricteds and all of our restricteds and prohibs.
Far easier to get a variety of factory 300 win mag ammo than 300 wea mag ammo.
The 300 win mag can do anything in the practical realm of hunting the 300 wea mag can do.

With the cost of premium ammo these days it is not that far off Weatherby prices.Point and shoot at 300 yds devastating hydrostatic shock very effective big game cartridge.

finding ammo isn't an issue and neither is cost, any 300 win mag around here is going for $500 easy and I can get this 300 wby mag for $350 and a full box of ammo

I don't know why people are saying the ammo for a 300 wby mag is expensive, at cabelas and bass pro and a couple of other local gun shops it might be 10 dollars more than the barnes ammo I run in my 22-250, big deal if I spend 20 or 30 bucks more year

300 Wby is a great caliber. I only ever fired a German-Made MkV - kicked like a friggin' mule - much worse than my 375 or 458, even worse than my son's very light 375. But it is one of the best ever. Not sure, ballistically, which I'd choose between it and the RUM, but the Wby has been around for a looong time. Not so sure we'll be able to say the same about the RUM's, nice as they are.
