is the 300 win mag a good choice for a long range rifle?? I want to use the Rem 700 action......

300 rum better?

I wanted to build a 338 lapua but don't think the remmy 700 can handle it....

Please help me to decide on the caliber.....

300 WM or 300 Ultra

I would go withe the 300 WM. It is accurate and powerful, with a huge bullet selection. You can get better quality brass than for the Ultramag(Rem only), and brass is much cheaper. It uses way less powder, with little given up to the Ultra in speed. You have better factory load selection also, which is nice if ya don't have any handloads on hand but want to shoot.
The biggest thing is it has significantly less recoil than the 300 Ultramag.

.300 Win Mag Rocks!!! and if its built as well as mine, has no recoil, O.K. equal to .223 if you call that recoil. But as with any L.R. rig it realy depends on what you want to do with it. Mystic has had awsome success with his 7mm and he can tell ya more on that. What shooting dicipline are you planning on shooting or is it just target shooting for your own enjoyment? Is hunting involved, and to what ranges? My wife is currently haveing a .300 Win Mag done for her, Using a Rem 700 action. I have had mine out to Exciting ranges with excellent accuracy and am very happy with it. But it's realy going to come down to what do you want to do with your rifle.

define 'good.' That like asking 'how long is a piece of string?' Certainly it has it's share of successes, but so has the PPC, 6BR, 308, 7mm, 6.5-284, etc, etc.

if you barrel it with enough twist to make use of the longer 200+ grain bullets, then it will rock out a long ways, probably 1500 yards if you got enough barrel length to launch a big VLD to good speeds :)

Certainly has alot of potential, with sane recoil in big tactical packages.

You mentioned the 338 Lapua - the 338RUM is basically the 'poor man's version,' and if you can tolerate the recoil, it's a good one.

What are you planning on shooting? If it's just paper, I'd suggest a smaller, lighter-recoiling caliber. Anything the 300 can do, the 7mm can also do with the VLD's available for it, just with less thump when it strikes - on both ends. Even the beefier 6.5's with a nice long VLD should be good at similar ranges, but, at 1500 yards it doesn't have much steam left - you could probably kill a coyote, but nothing much bigger IMHO
