Hello folks,

I'm looking for some recommendations on what manufacturer/grain/type of ammo I should use for target shooting and big game hunting. Over the counter stuff. Something to hold me over for a year or so until I have the opportunity to get into re-loading.

I own a .300 Win Mag Browning X Bolt.

I went to a local small hunting/sporting good store and bought a box of Federal Fusion 165 grain ammo. Anyone have some opinions on this type?

Thanks,

Neil

If you are looking for reasonable price and usually in stock head down to your local sporting store, or if none near by head into to Wallyworld and pick up some 300 Win Mag Winchester Ballistic Silvertips in 165gr. They run about $43.00 per box, quite accurate in my Ruger M77 MkII, and they come with some nice Nickel (silver cases). Keep your brass for when you start to reload, or horde it like a troll and sell it on CGN. Some rifles do exceptional with just regular Winchester or Federal ammunition. Depending on the bullet quality (which usually isn't too great in the lower priced ammo) ammunition for this rifle will run from $30 - $80 depending on your preference or more importantly your rifles preference. What is your intended use? Hunting or paper punching? Size of Game?

I find the cheep winchester powerpoints to be great for target shooting.
for hunting i load barnes TSX BT 150 gr - all copper HP's. amazing penitration and mushrooming while retaining there weight.

I don't recommend ballistic tips in a .300WM for big game. I've seen deer hit with them @ 3300 fps MV, and it ain't pretty, especially if it is under 100yds.

You're far better off with a regular soft-point bullet for target shooting, they're about half the price and will shoot just as good. In my .300WM I used federal blue-box 180gr SP for targets, and 180gr Partitions for game. Both rounds shot under 1" from my Tikka.

x2 IMO. I will say go with Winchester Supreme Accubonds in 180gr or XP3's in 150/180gr. Next would be Federal 180gr Accubonds or TSX/TTSX's

I use 180gr AB's reloads in my 300WM but previously shot Winchetser Supreme CT AB's. Best choice of bullet weight is the 180's for the 300WM IMO.

The win power point and soft points work just fine for moose and bears. I have rarely used anything else, and I've never needed a second shot. (180 grainers are perfect for the .300 win mag) but she sure shines with the bigger bullets. Thats what separates the .300 from the .30-06 IMHO. The fusions are good for the money also. Just see what works and shoots well in your gun and you will be golden.
Down the road when you reload, keep it simple and use Nosler partitions or accubonds. They are pretty much failsafe for all our game in these parts.

Fusion is the best ammo for the $, I would go with 165 or 180 gr in the 300 Mag. Avoid Ballistic tips if hunting moose.

i have a 300 win mag m77 and i use 180 grain all the time
but i only shoot at big game
when you are considering what grain of bullet to use you must now what twist your barrel has

I am pretty sure he has a 1 in 10 twist. Just fine for 220 gr or less bullets. I had pretty good luck with Federal blue box 180 Hot-Cor bullets too. They were pretty cheap, and they are as good a "cup n core" bullet as your likely gonna find on a budget. Regular jacketed bullets are fine for our game. And as long as you stay in the 180 grain range, you won't brutalize your quarry too much. I'd stay away from 150 grainers, as at that velocity, I have seen some massive blood shot wounds. Moderate speed is fine.
