I'm looking to buy a 300 Win mag rifle. I want people's or owners opinion on what to suggest. I have a budget of $1000 plus or minus $100. So far I'm leaning towards a CZ550 Medium Lux in terms of quality and reputation. If you can suggest something more bang for the buck I'm all ears. Within that price range of course.

I can hear the Salvage crowd running this way...:p

The CZ will be a fine rifle, as would a Winchester M70. Throw in an extra $100 and you could get a new supergrade.

More bang for the buck? I'd look at a Zastava from Tradex.

The CZ is a more refined rifle, but the Zastava is a Mauser action (I think is CRF), and it's about half the price of the CZ.

^ The Zastava comes in right or left actions as well.

Plus they have all rifles chambered in all these cartridges: 6.5x55, .270Win, 7mmRM, .30-06, .300WM & 9.3x62.

There's other (better) options besides the .300Win...

I was humming and hawing between a cz550 in 300 wm or a win 70.

I ended up with the cz550 and I love it.

I'm sure I likely would have been just as happy with the win 70.

Bear in mind that mounting optics can be just a little trickier on the CZ due to the bolt throw. A leupy fit mine with medium rings (barely) but the Zeiss required high rings.

Also, the rings are proprietary, so sometimes finding high rings can be just a little tricky. Clay at prophet river ended up getting them for me.

It is nice that you don't need to mess around with a base though. I also like that I can just pop the scope off if I need to and the irons are ready to rock. The win 70 I was looking at did not have irons at all, so that is what ended up making the decision for me.

Edited to add: sorry I think that I might have been a little confusing describing the scope situation. They were both 3-9x40, but the larger ocular bell on the zeiss interferred with the bolt handle with medium rings. This was not an issue on the leupold....

Sketts could you tell me more about the scope rings? I have a 30mm Meopta scope,
older model of this one here that I want to use:

Would this be the same dimensions as your Leupold or Zeiss?

There are 9 right hand Zastavas listed on TradeEx...

And the issue with scope mounting is what turns me off of the CZ. The scope really does need to be mounted too high for my liking.

well the zeiss has a 41 mm eyepiece and the the leupold says 40.6 mm.

honestly I didn't think that it was that close, but there you have it, leupold fit with medium rings, zeiss did not.

The zeiss also had a rubber bit around the eyepiece but I don't recall that being the issue.

If I ever put new glass on that rifle, it would probably be a 2-7x33 on med rings.

I'll be first to suggest the tikka T3 here ;) They seem to be a 50/50 love/hate ratio among most here. I love 'em. Have a look at one next time you have a chance, and see how you feel about it. As far as bang for your buck accuracy wise, you can't go wrong with the T3
