I just bought a new custom 300 Win Mag ( my first rifle in this chambering)

- What are the best choices for a temperature insensitive powder for this cartridge?

- Any recommended loads with 180 TSX, or Accubond is appreciated.

Thanks

If you go to the Nosler and Barnes websites they both have a reloading section that give suggested loads. Rifles will react differently to the same load so you must work up your loads anyway. I don't use either bullet in my 300 but for Hornady and Speer 180's my rifle likes H4831SC with loads of 75 gr . In your rifle this may be too much so work up all loads carefully. Have fun its a great cartridge.

Have had great success with RL 17 in 30.06 and other cartridges gives you more speed than most powders, and excellent accuracy.

I'd suggest you go buy a couple up to date manuals.
Then see what is left on your dealers shelf for powder, and go work up some loads.

Good luck

I've had very good results from IMR7828SSC (SSC being Super Short Cut). Now, I bought a fair chunk of Reloader 22 to try and didn't get very good results. I switched to IMR7828...no SSC....just the regular length extruded power, and didn't get very good results even through the reload data says everything should be the same. At any rate, I did a little checking and the most likely cause at this time is that the throat of my chamber is finally starting to become erroded after over 2000 rounds :D

At any rate, when the gun was newer, I shot bench rest in everything from +30 to -30C and IMR7828SSC worked very well all through the spectrum using 180gr Speer Spitzers.

I'm actually heading out to my gunsmith today to get a new heavy barrel ordered up.

Maxx, you might want to think more about seating depth. I have an HSPrec. in 300 win, the throat is really long. I am shooting factory federal 180 trip shocks out of it. At factory COL they are terrible, i redid the seating job on them, moved then out to the lands and backed em off, and wouldn't you know it, one hole groups... killed a moose this fall at 408yds (lazered). I say this because most 300 winnies will shoot almost any powder, at least all of mine did. Noslers max load for 180's with 7828 is still a favorite when i load up my own

thanks for all the great info guys. I can't wait to get this rifle in my hands and work up some loads!

Unfortunately alot of rifles have a throat that is such that if you load for that length, the round won't fit in the magazine, go figure!

All of my 300 Winchesters shoot puny groups with RL-22.
Run things wide open somewhere between 74-76 grains.

As a matter of fact I have never seen a 300Win that would not shoot 75 grains of RL-22 and 180 Partitions into one small hole at 100 yards.

I have also had good accuracy with IMR-7828 and H-4831.

If you are worried about temp sensitivity, [I think this aspect is highly overrated!] then you narrow your choices considerably. Here are powders that qualify in that group: H4350, H4831SC, H1000, Norma MRP, If you are willing to try others that are considered temp sensitive, then you have IMR 4350 & 4831, IMR 7828, RL 19 & 22, Vihtavuori N160, N165 & N560, MR3100, etc. The 300 Win Mag is generally thought of as an accurate chambering. I have had phenomenal success with IMR 4831 and 180 Partition in several of these. Regards, Eagleye.

4831SC is the only powder I've tried, and it works so well I can't be bothered to try to improve on it, but I've only tried 165 grain bullets so far, as that's all that was available last fall around here. 74gr pushes them at 3000fps.

Sorry I forgot H-1000...I use this one a lot in my long range target rifles.
It's a great powder for consistency, temperature stability and heavy bullets.

FWIW RL-22 usually pushes 180 grain bullets accurately to somewhere around 3100-3150fps...A hard load to beat.

IRM 4831
RL 22
180gr NP do the best for 300WM.

I had great results with H4831 and 180 grain bullets. Good velocity and great accuracy. I never compared chronograph data between summer and dead of winter, so I don't know if there was a velocity effect. I do know that I had equally great accuracy in the snowdrifts as I did in the summer.

i shoot the barnes 168gr ttsx's with 73 grns of imr4831 and a cci magnum primer. Very accurate. I know you asked for the 180 load. I haven't worked up a load for them just yet, thought i would post the 168 in case you got the urge to try something a bit different. I have used the 168's on deer, moose and bears. The tsx's are a great bullet, performs well on everything so far. My only complaint is that i haven't been able the recover one yet(bullet). They have all been pass throughs. I thought i was going to get one from a broad side shot on a moose at quite an extended distance. When i got to the moose he had a hole in each side:(:( the 300 is a great cartridge good luck and good shootin:)
