300 Win or 35 Whelen

pretty different cartridges that kill the same, the 300 makes hitting stuff outside of most peoples effective range easier in theory
 
I have both--35 whelen and a 300 H + H. I carry the whelen when I am in heavier cover areas and the 300 in the more open areas--although either would work as an "all around" rig where I hunt.

I bought a 35 Whelen and hunted with it for one season. Took 3 head of game with it, including a moose. Seemed to work fine, but I prefer my 30-338 (or 308 Norma Mag) for the better reach they afford. Sold the Whelen....fine rifle and chambering, just not for me. Regards, Eagleye.
 
I've got one .35 Whelen, and am not really sure how many .300s have passed through my hands. Currently I have 2. In my area, and the style of hunting I do the .300 fits into my life better. I'll keep the Whelen forever, as it was my "engagement rifle", a gift from my wife of 18 years.
The 35 Whelen was originally developed as a "poorman's .375" back when magnum length actions were rare and expensive. That situation changed many decades ago, and the real .375 kicks it's ass in every possible way.It even does a fair job at making the .300 redundant.

Anyway, for the issue at hand, I personally own a .35 Whelen and I've certainly considered getting a .300 magnum of some variety. If you have the need and ability to shoot beyond 300 yards I'd suggest the .300 Winchester. But if you don't have the need or aren't confident in shooting beyond 300 yards the Whelen will do anything you could want in my opinion.

For my own use my longer range chores are being taken care of with a .270 Winchester that is filling that need quite nicely. Much like 44 Bore I'd like to have a 300 H&H to go along with my Whelen. In my case I'd be using it for flat trajectory like a .270 but with bigger wound channels and better penetration.

Over the summer I shot my Whelen a fair bit from prone and sitting and within 300 yards it works wonderfully. I even knocked off groundhogs as far away as 275 yards with it.
