300 Win or Ultra ??

Hi All ... I'm new to this forum ... and just wanted to get opinions from the experts !!

I'm thinking of buying a new rifle ... I have a couple .270's, a .222, a .303, and a 30.06 ... but looking at ballistics of the .300 ultra mag ... I was pretty impressed ! Gottalove how it shoots flat to 300 yds!

Most of my rifles are Remington's - with the .270 and 30.06 being 7600 pump models. So ... I'm thinking of a semi auto. It certainly won't be a 7400 Remington "jamomatic".

Any opinions on the preference of the "Win Mag" or "Ultra Mag" - and the difference ? All I've really heard for difference is the Ultra Mag ammo is hard to find !

I'm an Outfitter in Northern Ontario ... and occasionally while guiding I have to make a long "finish him off" shot and the .300 sounds like my kind of gun. Not to mention that I hunt personally for the table.

Thanks for taking the time to give your opinion

I own a .300 ultra and love it. A friend hand loads for me, he uses Retumbo powder and it really tames the bark. It is all what you want and can shoot well. Between the two there is not alot of difference for most shooters but if you have to make extra long kill shots the Ultra will shine at the long stuff. Most guys on this site will say that you don't need the Ultra over the WM but I am happy with my choice.
Happy shopping

.308 win
.30-06
.300 mag
.300 ultra

all are .30 cals, all leave the same size hole. the only difference is speed. so how far do you intend on shooting?

as you are a guide I would NOT consider a .308cal a suitable firearm. it is not a stopper. consider it just a longer range .308. so from a purely long range hunting point of view it's an excellent firearm for long distance, thin skinned, non dangerous game.

300 Win Mag gets my vote

unless you're skilled enough to shoot in the field at 400+ yards, then I don't think you'd ever notice the gains a 300 Ultra has over a 300 Win Mag. You might however notice the cons of it, like heavier rifles, longer barrels, more recoil, more deafening muzzle blast, more expensive ammo, and on average probably not as accurate, all things being equal.

my .02, go with the 300 Win Mag

While I don't think you will notice much difference at 300 yards between your 30-06 and the 300 Magnums, I'd go for a 300 WM, for the same reaosn that Todbartell said.

I own two 300 ultramags and am very happy with them. That being said, the 300ultramag offers no benefit over the 300win mag at distances of 300 yards or less and then only if you reload. As far as accuracy is concerned though, both of my rifles average 5/8" groups with the 180gr tsx which is more than adequate for any big game hunting and every bit as accurate as an equivalent 300win mag.

You should consider the 300WSM... If you are guiding you would be concerned about weight and efficiency... the Short Mag in .300 will do anything the .300WM will do... but with less weight and a shorter action.

The 300 win will still get the job done as it always has.I take it you don't need a true stopping rifle as your from ontario, not alot of brown bears there.
Grab the 300 win load it with a 200gr nosler @2900+ and you have an excellent combo

Howdy Gatehouse ...

There is quite a difference ... at 300 yds. a 30.06 drops 8 1/2" further than a .300 Ultra Mag.

Normally with the "ot 6" ... I won't shoot over 250 yds. I just don't like being "unsure" and taking a pot shot - as I call it.

Now - I'll ask a really stupid question !! What does WSM mean ?
BigRed - the type of hunting I'm guiding that I'd like a .300 ... is long shots in open areas (clear cuts, etc) ... sitting on a ridge watching an open valley with a marsh or swamp. So - a "bush gun" such as a 30-30 wouldn't be effective.

I have been in the position that the hunter doesn't make a great shot and a good follow up shot is needed once in a while to knock down the moose - (in attempt to save ALOT of tracking and dragging !!)

The advice of a .300 Win Mag with a 200 Grain Nosler sounds good.

Thanks much everyone.

there is a six inch difference in trajectory at 300 yards when both are zero'd for 100 yards

not too many guys with 300 Ultras zero for 100y...

when the 30-06 is zero'd at 225 yards, its drop at 300 yards is 6.5"

a 300 Ultra would drop 4" (both with 180 gr. ~ 2700 fps vs 3300 fps)

A 300 Ultra would be better off with a 275 yard zero, and at 400 yards it would drop 10 inches, compared to a 30-06 (225 yard zero) dropping 21 inches. A difference for sure there.

I wouldn't call a 250 yard shot with a 30-06 a 'pot shot'...........

Winchester Short Magnum

It wouldn't make much sense. My own 300ultramags are zeroed for 300 yards. At 100yards they are 2-3/4" high,at 200 yards 3-1/2" high at 400 yards 7" low and at 500 yards 19" low. Those are values obtained from actual shooting so they may vary from calculated figures.I am shooting the 180gr tsx chronographed at 3370fps.

300 Win Mag all the way. But to tell you the truth if I had to choose among the mags out there I would choose a 300 WSM for reasons already stated. I really like the new Winchester M70 Stainless Featherweight.

300 win mag is my medicine of choice for everything, hunting and competitive shooting.

Normally with the "ot 6" ... I won't shoot over 250 yds. I just don't like being "unsure" and taking a pot shot - as I call it.

By the way the old 06 has had a great run at 1000 yard work in years gone by.
Shooting at any distance is really only a matter of quality time at the range.

For a guide I would think the win has more merit also as ammo is far more available and less costly. Sorry not a RUM fan at all.

i would go with the ultra mag over the winchester mag simply because it's unbelted and that improves headspace and accuracy is increased and well remingtons are just good guns and good cartridges.my question is why would you want a semi they are garbage!!
