So I'm getting ready to try reloading some reduced loads for my Tikka 300 WM. I've developed a full-power load using RL22 and 180 gr. Accubonds some time ago and am happy with the accuracy.

This time around I'm planning on using H4831 with 180 gr. Winchester Silvertips. Do I just take the minimum load suggested in the appropriate chart and start working up? I'm hoping to get bullet speeds in the 30-06 range, with the corresponding reduced recoil.

For best results with even slightly reduced loads you will prolly find that a faster burning powder will work better then reducing loads with a slow burning powder. Sumpin' like 4895 or some such.

I load 180 grain cast bullets in my 300 win mag with 16.5 grains of Unique. They're deadly accurate and are going about as fast as a 30-30. A little more powder and a jacketed bullet would have them in the 30-06 range pretty quickly.

Why not just use full pop loads? I nailed this guy last year with my 300. After I pulled the trigger, he didn't take another step :)

If it's about lowering recoil, try some H4350. The velocity goes down a little with the max loads, but the kick goes down a lot. Starting loads wouldn't be much different than a 30-06.

blacksmithden, another argument against head shots. I would never use that as an example of anything except a very bad shot. You are lucky that animal didn't die a slow agonizing death somewhere you could never find it.
