.300 WM or .338 LM... Can only keep one. Which to sell?

Hey all.

I have a conundrum and need advice. I have to make room in the safe, and I have decided to sell one of two precision rifles. Money's an issue; I can't afford optics for two precision rifles. Time's an even bigger issue though; I don't have the time or resources to do hand-load development (experimenting with loads, shooting, tracking performance and such) for two calibres. I'd really like to concentrate on one and get it right.

So I have a Sako TRG-42 in .300 Win Mag, and a Savage 110 FCP-HS in .338 Lapua Magnum. Longest range I have access to in my area is 800m.

If you had both and had to sell one, which would get the boot? I already own a .308 precision rifle... With that in mind, is the .300 Win Mag an unnecessary middle-ground? Or is the .338 just too much gun for 800m?

Money wise, the .338 costs more to shoot, but it's a relatively inexpensive rifle to keep. The .300 WM is worth a lot if I sell it, but it's cheaper to shoot.

I get out shooting about once a month only (life responsibilities keep getting in the way, but that's another story)

Thanks, any advice appreciated.

Personally, I'd keep the .300 win mag. 800m just isn't far enough in my mind to justify the cost of running a .338. Hell, your .308 will get you past 800m easily, your .300 win mag will get you to 1500 yards if ever the opportunity comes around.

I'd get rid of both, 308 will do everything you want to do with the space you have available. but then again, i'm a a minimalist. Take the funds and pour it into you existing 308....

You can down load the 338, if both rifles are are accurate to the same degree it would be a easy choice for me to keep the lapua.

You may want to sell 308 and 338LM as well and keep the TRG. Sako is a great rifle that will keep its value for years. 300 win mag is a great caliber as well (LRPS and hunting any big game in NA).

338LM!!!! Not enough difference from a 308 to 300win for me. 308 will do anything short of 1000 yards and 338 will smash anything from 200-1600yards!

You can down load the 338, if both rifles are are accurate to the same degree it would be a easy choice for me to keep the lapua.

Both rifles are more accurate than I'm capable of shooting right now... ;)

But yea, between .308 and .338 there's plenty of overlap.

If it were me, and I had to choose between a Sako TRG42 or a Savage, I would choose to keep the Sako hands down.

Since you live in Ottawa and there is a 900m DND range in Napean, that you could shoot on if you were a member of the NCRRA. However that range is not template for .338LM so the .300WM gets the nod. If you do shoot there don't be discouraged when someone shows up and beats you at 900m with a .223:(

Sell both and buy 50.

Lots of people get a .338 think it is the cats pajamas , then realize they don't have the space or facilities to utilize it's potential.

Shooting it below 1000 yards is a big waste of powder and resources.

Right tool for right application but you don't need a dump truck to haul groceries.

I would sell the 338. A 300 Win Mag loaded with 215 bergers is a hard combo to beat out to 1000 + yards. Less powder and recoil as well.

Sell all three and buy a quality 260 or 6.5 Creedmoor and put wicked glass on it. Easy and inexpensive to shoot and will dominate at the distance you mentioned. If that is not an option, stick with the Sako, better rifle in every respect when compared to the Savage.
