noticed a Model 7 300wsm for sale new unfired, and was thinking maybe this would be good for the wife? i myself have never fired a WSM of any calibre.

She has shot my 7mm rem mag, my 35 whelen, she can handle the 7mm rem mag but wants less kick. would a 300 WSW in a gun like the Remi Model 7 be out of the question? We were thinking of the 7mm-08, as she wants to drop moose and deer, but the guys price is good on the 300 wsm

thx

Since she can shoot the bigger calibers but wants something smaller I think the bigger stuff might be right on the upper limit of her recoil tolerence and something smaller would be right in her comfort zone and would make shooting all that more pleasant for her.

something based on the 308 case should be perfect, as a bonus there is lots of rifles and ammo in the calibers.

I don't agree with the comments saying that "it's not recomended for people under 180 pounds" I'm 170 pounds and I shoot much bigger calibers on a regular basis with no problem at all, some of my shooting buddies are much bigger and some smaller and many of them won't shoot some of my rifles.

Recoil tolerance is a personal thing, weight, height, gender or age don't seem to be much of a factor, I say shoot the biggest caliber your "comfortable" with and if it's smaller than your buddies gun who cares it doesn't make you a "wimp".

You were right on with the 7-08. Forget the 300. The good price will soon be forgotten when your wife is scared to death of the thing. If it's not fun for her to shoot, what else matters?

i had a rem 7 in 7short and i have a tikka in 300 short. the 300 wins the recoil race. if the wifes not comfortable with a rem 7 i don't think she would be happy with the rem in 300.the 7 08 would be good as felt recoil is much lighter than a 7 mag.

If you handload, then your options grow quite a bit. Load it down a touch, and the recoil goes away. But a 300WSM shooting factory ammo will kick similarly to a 300WM, and given the light weight of the seven, I'd estimate that the kick will be substantially greater than your 7mm RM. Same goes for the 270 WSM - it's very similar to the 7mm RM, in a much lighter rifle.

It may just be me, but I've found the stock shape on the Seven is not exactly ideal for felt recoil. Mine was a 7mm-08 in a SS and it had similar felt recoil as my 9lb 7mm RM. I'd guess that in the .300WSM it would be uncomfortable - the problem, IMO, is that the butt is very narrow, and it seems to dig in with each shot.

I agree with the others in suggesting to stick with a 7mm-08 or .308 if you want a model seven.

In a model 7 that thing is going to be flat out abusive IMO, and loud too.

My 30/06 700 mountain rifle is bad for recoil, and the 7 is lighter with a shorter barrel.

Which BTW may be a foolish thing to attach to any mag... a 20" barrel...

I have a Browning that weighs about the same, I weigh 250 lbs and i feel the recoil. Don't do it, if she wants magnum power then she needs a magnum rifle, full size.

My wife-then fiance tool over my 1st Tikka T3 LS 270WSM in the 2004 season, so I bought another for myself. She loves to shoot the rifle. She shoots factory Winchester Supreme Accubonds 140gr. This caliber and bullet combo has be very deadly from her first mulie buck and cow elk in 2004, fatherinlaw's cow elk and WT in 2004 & 2005, and my cow elk in 2005- all 1 shot kills at various distances.

It has a bit more recoil than what people expect at the range. For my wife at the range with the new gun after I sighted it in, her first shot was perfect, her second shot was ok, but she wasn't holding the rifle good, and it popped her in the shoulder a good one! But she did'nt back away and wanted to shoot immediately again not to be recoil shy of the gun and placed the 3rd and 4th shots almost in the same hole as the first. I was very proud of her! So I would highly recommend the 270WSM for the women. If your wife can handle the 7mm RM then she will like the 270WSM. If she likes the 270WSM, the new factory load from the Winchester Supreme Elite XP3 is in 150gr. bullet. This will also bea great bullet for the 270WSM, plus any other caliber I believe.
