Hey fellas/ladies.

Helping a friend reload for his 300wsm (tikka bolt gun)

Anyone have advice on powders/projectiles primers? just as a starting point...

Also is there a round that tends to perform best? I know out of a .308 168gr bthp is thought to be the round of choice, any recommendations for distance shooting in a 300wsm?

Thanks!

I will be following this thread somewhat closely because I also have a Tikka T3 300 WSM that I'll be loading for. Like the poster above, I have 165 gr. TSX to try, as well as 150 gr. TSX, if I want to shoot for greater velocity. I'll be using RL17 instead of RL19, though. Word has it that this stuff shines with the 300 WSM. The H4350 works well, too, from what my buddy tells me (he has a Sako 300 WSM). Because the TSX/TTSX retains almost 100% of its weight on impact, it's like shooting bullets that are 25-30 gr. heavier, plus I like the idea of eating lead free meat so it's a good choice as a projectile.

Of course, what worked well in the poster above's rifle or what might work well in mine could be entirely different than what might work well in your buddy's gun since every rifle behaves differently. I'm hoping to get 32-3300 fps with these loads, which according to the Barnes Loading Site is supposed to be doable.

165 Hornady GMX, 64.0 grains of Reloder 17 in a Winchester case, fired by a CCI 250 primer.
Please start lower and work up....this is a max working load in my Vanguard.
It shoots very well, indeed, and velocities are great. Dave.

63.2 grains of either RL 17 or IMR 4350 behind 180 grain Accubonds, Interbonds, or Interlocks shoots great in my Savage 16 or my friends Tikka,
both in 300 wsm.

Just under 3000 fps with the 4350 and just over with the RL 17.

The Interlock seems to be a little more accurate in the Tikka.
The magazine is real short in the Tikka so the Accubonds and Interbonds had to be seated deeper than in the Savage,
which seems to affect accuracy.

I tried 165 grain bullets but wasn't able to get good results in the Savage, no matter what I tried.
When I switched to 180's,the groups seemed to tighten up considerably.

The Tikka has taken 2 big Bull Elk with those Interlocks, the Savage has taken several deer with both the Accubonds and Interlocks,
Mule deer and White Tail.

I have a Tikka T3 in 300 WSM and I worked up a load for 180gr Barnes TTSX using VIT N550. I haven't shot anything with fur and four legs but my Tikka loves several in the 180Gr weights, Accubonds, factory Power Points.

Hard to beat H4350 and a 180 accubond

That's where I'm at as well, jumping back and forth between the 180 accubonds and ballistic tips. Interestingly I can also use the 165 Nosler with H4350 and all Of them shoot together with the same POI from zero to 500. It's almost
spooky, but I haven't found any real Way to capitalize on that.

In my Winchester Super Grade in .300 WSM a 180 grain Hornady Interlock over 70 grains of R-22 and F215 primers gives excellent accuracy. In a .300 WSM my s-I-l had a different Winchester and he found 71 grains of R-22 to be very accurate. I tried this load but found it to be a little too hot in my gun. As mentioned some experimentation is needed to find exactly what each gun prefers.

I've got 2 rifles in 300 WSM. One is a Tikka the other a Wby Vanguard. Both shoot 150 gr TTSX's into cloverleaf type groups with 69 grs of IMR 4350. This is max in win cases for both rifles so start about 65 or 66 grs and work up in your rifle. That 150 gr TTSX has shot through a pretty big bull elk. It penetrates about what a 180 gr cup and core type bullet does.

Don't be too shocked if you can't load the maximum loads in some books. Mine gets the listed velocities with basically starting loads from most books. If I loaded anyone's max loads I'd be looking for a cutting torch.

165 grain Accubond's or Interbond's or Partitions over a mid 60's charge of H4350, set off by a CCI 250. Should get you a bit over 3100fps.

Try the 168 ttsx and RL17 . My T3 and a friends both shot that load awesome. 1/2" at 200 yards @ 3240 fps. We used 68 gr of RL17, win brass , 215m primers.

My Tikka 300 wsm loves the 180 Accubond and H4350. No problem taking my elk this fall with that load. The 180 gr bullets have always shined out of any 300 mag Ive shot and friends have shot.

Cheers!!
