.300 WSM or .30-06 ?

I have owned rifles in both calibers;

I liked the short action of the 300WSM and the recoil seemed a little lighter to me.

The 30-06, you can buy ammo anywhere and if you don't reload it is cheaper to buy.

Bottom line I don't think any of the animals I shot with either of these rifles new if they were hit with a WSM or a 06...

A gunwriter whose articles I used to read quite often was fond of saying "if it can't be done with a 30-06, it probably can't be done" or something along those lines.

It depends on what you like. Does a 300 magnum "kill" any better than a 30-06? Maybe...Many people report that they do, actually. Does it matter? Probably not.

the 300WSM will flatten trajectory a bit, especially at longer ranges. This may or may not be important to you.

I have a 300WSM, and I've had 30-06's. I'll take the 300WSM over the 30-06 anyday, but that is because I find it more interesting. They will both feed fine.

Choosing a cartridge based on "what happens if you forget your ammo" is about the dumbest criteria of all. Take steps to make sure you have ammunition, period.

What is the dumbest reason, ammo availability or boredom? hmmmm
Pick either, your gonna think you made the wrong choice when you get it home anyways.
 
300 short!!!! :stirthepot2:(PS it kills things just as dead as the 30-06) Oh and by the way if I had of already owned a 30-06 I liked I would not have bought a .300wsm cause they do the same thing one just does it with a 15gr heavier bullet.

Education will always cost you something! Get the one "you" like and shoot it till you can't feel your arm:D:sniper:
 
I didn't read the entire thread but I'd say you should look at yourself what is you personal experience with heavier recoiling rifles if your new to the game look at the 30-06 if you can handle the heavier recoil of the 300WSM go for it.

I hunted with a 30-06 for years then my grandfather gave me a 308 Norma Mag after working up a load for it I ended up parking the 30-06 now both rifles are gone and I have replaced them with a 20" barreled Rem 700 LSS in 30-06 and a 26" barreled Rem 700 LSS in 300RUM I will use the 30-06 loaded with 180gr Scirroco's @ 2650fps or 165gr Accubonds @ 2750fps when I'm hunting heavier cover or if I'm driving down the road and the 300RUM with 200gr Accubonds @ 3200fps when shots can be out to 500 yards.
